CUSTOM AREA COMPTROLLER IN CHARGE OF KANO AND JIGAWA STATES, MR SANUSI USMAN AZARE BRIEFING JOURNALISTS ON THE SEIZURE OF IMPORTED ARMY UNIFORMS AND BULLET PROOF VESTS SHIPPED VIA THE AMINU KANO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, TODAY, APRIL 06, 2011.

KANO, April 06, (THEWILL) - Officials of the Nigerian Customs attached to the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport Kano have impounded eight (cool unaccompanied boxes containing 190 Nigerian Army uniforms and bullet proof vests shipped to the attention of one Bashir Kano (his name was written on all boxes).

Displaying the impounded hardware to journalists, the Area Custom Comptroller in charge of Kano and Jigawa, Mr. Usman Sunusi Azare said the apparels were flown in unaccompanied onboard a flight 0573 from Beirut, Lebanon. He described the act as a breach of national security.

“These items should not have been imported. The boxes were thoroughly searched by my officers which resulted in the discovery of these items. The most interesting issue here is that, these items are coming in at a particular time when our nascent democracy is being tested to the limit. We in the Custom service will continue to keep vigil on every item that comes via this airport,” he stated.

The Area Comptroller said two persons have been arrested in connection with the seizure and are now chatting with different security agencies. “On the same day a passenger from Egypt Air flight 0879 came forward to claim ownership of the goods together with another individual, that was how the arrest was made,” he added.

The state Public Relations Officer, Mr. Charles Muka, who confirmed this disclosed that three persons were also arrested in connection with the seizure.

The PPRO said that the ammunition was intercepted by men of the command on tip off on Tuesday evening at Kwale.

LEADERSHIP recalled that the command had last Thursday intercepted and arrested a Kia Rio Car fully loaded with guns, explosives and grenades in Patani, the administrative headquarters of Patani Local Government Council.

It was also reported that two police officers who escorted the car and aides of a prominent candidate in one of the political parties were apprehended by the police at a checkpoint at the border town between Delta and Bayelsa States.

The Kia Rio Car marked XB 184 BRS Bayelsa State was said to have been covered in the campaign posters of one of the South- South governors.

Also recovered from the hoodlums were two expended cartridges, three 7.62mm expended ammunition and one long cutlass.

Similarly, four persons have been arrested in connection with the recovered arms and ammunitions and they are currently helping the police in their investigations.

Parading the suspects yesterday at the headquarters of the state police command, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Peter Gana said the suspects were arrested when the police got information that some politicians have been piling arms and ammunitions for the forthcoming general elections.

However, the leader of the gang who identified himself as Sheu Olawumi (29), said while being interrogated by Journalists that all the eleven members of the gang paraded are card carrying members of a leading ******** Lagos State.

But, he said that their mission in Osun State was on the invitation of a member of House of Represenative, who employed them as political thugs for his campaign rallies.

There is so much to deal with in the upcoming election.
The culprits should be held and made to bring up the names of their sponsor.
