Put in another way; the North can now place the south on sanctions and embargoes whenever it feels so? And once the sanctions are on, we can starve to death since we are not allowed to import from other parts of the world even though we have the money to do so? Is this not worse than slavery?

Nigeria was still importing food commodities when something like this happened under the previous administration, the experience was still bad. Under this administration with total ban on food items, it will be worse

seborrhic:
There was a time, about 3-4years or so ago, when tomatoes were not only very expensive, but even so scarce; it was that year I knew tomatoes were also grown in the Southwest with their own breed.
Though not as tasty as that from the North, but many people had to make do with that breed of Swestern tomatoes.
[s] When push comes to shove, there would always be an alternative because the entire South and the middle Belt are thick in the rainforest zones, and this is always the best kind of climate for food crops and even animals. [/s]
It's just that the ready availability of these foodstuffs from the North has not made people in other zones to explore the vast potentials of their lands.

Talk is cheap. Real farmers are not on Nairaland typing away their sorrow, they're in the farms,........ in the northern part of the country. What did southerners learn from the past experience? Nothing. Only to be shouting "our oyel"

So the south relies on the north for most of their staples. If the northerners want to punish the south. Very easy. This should be an eye opener. Over reliance is a symptom of a bad system of management. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

You are free not to sell your goods but where the government is helping oppression is by insisting that Nigerians can't import farm products from foreign countries! If you don't want to sell, your kettle of fish! But I should be free to make my purchases elsewhere. .. Northern Nigeria is not the one feeding the people of Egypt, Cameroon, south africa, China or mongolia. Those people get their excess food supplies from somewhere and they pay for it. Don't take yourself too serious! You are selling something you are being PAID for, more than the value. If you don't want to sell , fine! But government should open the borders so we can import better qualities at cheaper rates from serious business people elsewhere... You are not donating food to anyone.. Always remember that..
Importing proper soft, tasty beef from Brazil, USA, Australia will even be cheaper than the deseased cows these northerners sell to us. Beef that you can use to cook steak. Beef you do not have to boil for hours before it becomes soft. Beef that you don't loose a tooth chewing.
We will import and build up ranches sharp sharp.

The people will find alternatives.

In the short term the traders will suffer loss of income for the strike, and some of their produce will waste due to lack of proper storage. In the longer term they will suffer loss of patronage as alternatives to their becomes the norm.

The traders will lose!

Exactly... What nutrients are left in some thoroughly abused cows that were matched at gun point from Sokoto to Calabar!? Trekking! Pure khaki! But they will set monopolistic prices on these and still brag about it..

You are joking, you forgot that people come all the way from niger, mali to come buy farm produce in the north.

The north does not need southern market to survive
Then keep the produce and sell it to those people. Is that too hard?

Let the Federal Government address the issue of insecurity in Nigeria. If our security personnel cannot cope, the Federal Government should bring in foreign mercenaries.

Kidnapping is a daily routine on Benin- Auchi Road in Edo State.

While I believe we need ourselves in a peaceful environment where the Southern Nigeria is not taken as a Colonial subject (colonial inheritance ) of the North as their grandfather made them to believe and as they have taken the South, what you wrote is a falsehood. Early 2010, there was a crisis at mile 12 market, Lagos. The North refused to bring food products to Lagos. Later, out of frustration having waited for Fashola to appeal to them but no response and no patronage, they started to dump the products after long bridge before Kara, Ogun close to Lagos. Half of the products got spoilt and have to be sold at giveaway prices. They created market in that area. Later, Ogun State government came there and drove them to Ogere. They placed a big billboard there " This is not a market, the market is at Ogere". They have no choice, they have to return to Ogere.

Farm produce enter Lagos from Neighboring countries through Seme border. The border closure led to wastage of farm produce at Benin Republic.

https://afrikanheroes.com/2019/09/22/businesses-in-benin-republic-agonise-over-border-closure-with-nigeria/

Let me tell you something, we are helping the North by patronizing them. The Fulanis cannot lock our borders and stop selling farm produce, that is starvation. No Customs or Security agency from North can come closer to those borders or manage our ports under that situation. The land and the Sea would revolt. In as much as Yorubas will not go to Niger and Chad borders with the North to lock or monitor their borders, they can never try that here under emergency situations. I hope you understand.

Hearing about scarcities is not scary. It is a way of life here. What one should fear is news of abundance. That is a sign of the end time in this country.

There is such a thing as economics.
Growing foodstuffs for months only to hold back will lead to economic losses for farmers. Best believe the northern regions suffers the most as they will lose billions.

Another 1-2 years will see the South adjust and the North finally losing their advantage as a food basket.
