•It’s A Wrong Decision — CAN
There may be a commotion, tomorrow, in about 10 Christian secondary schools in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, if the imbroglio surrounding the use of veil (hijab) by Muslim female students, is not amicably resolved.

The 10 schools built by different Christian denominations had experienced grant aiding by the state government, 47 years ago, during the military era of the late David Bamigboye, as the governor.

Kwara State government had set up different committees, the latest being the one headed by the Deputy Governor, Mr. Kayode Alabi, to resolve the crisis.

Besides, it is believed that the matter over hijab had reached the Supreme Court, as church leaders and their Boards of Trustees were said to be praying the court for a return of these schools to their owners.

Shina Ibiyeye Esq, who is the Spokesman for the state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), said the issue of hijab was not raised at any level of the litigations over the battle for the return of the schools to owners.

Ibiyeye, while citing a trite cliche on law, said: “No known court under the sun should grant any request that was not pleaded for by the litigants appearing before it.” He wondered how the issue should be included in any judgment.

He said despite the development, the status quo ante should have been maintained until Supreme Court’s decision was churned out on the issue.

He faulted the government’s stance on the usage of the veil in designated schools.

Already, the state’s CAN said it would resist such a move, saying churches concerned would not let go the heritage of their forebears “at whatever price.”

A popular radio Islamic preacher in Ilorin, Prof. Abubakre Ali-Agan had sued for peace, imploring parties in the crisis to embrace tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

Already, the Baptist Conference and Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) jointly criticised the state government for allegedly taking a wrong decision in approving the wearing of hijab in grant-aided mission schools.

President, Kwara Baptist Conference, Rev. Victor Dada said the government took a wrong decision by its blanket approval of wearing of hijab for female pupils in mission schools.

Chairman, ECWA Ilorin District Church Council, Rev. John Owoeye said: “We demand the return of our schools to us in earnest. We refuse enforcement of hijab on our pupils, knowing full well that our schools are church heritage and we shall use every licit means to protect it. We promise to defend our faith and property with the whole of our strength and might.”

Kwara government should not force using of hijab on christian schools, they're trying hard to islamize nigeria. All your plans won't work.

May the Almighty God grant the State Government the wisdom of King Solomon on this matter.

Like I earlier said on a similar thread, constitutionally, muslim students have the right to wear hijab in a govt owned christian sch, but the reality on ground is that, govt owned muslim schools in Ilorin would not tolerate christian students to have fellowship [FCS] in their schools. Now, why should christian schools tolerate the use of hijab? If Kwara state govt wants to be fair in this situation, as they are enforcing the use of hijab in all gov't owned schools, they should as well pass the law that all christian student should be allowed to have fellowship in all gov't owned muslim schools. That's fairness and religious tolerance!

CAN cannot win the case in supreme court. Only way out is for missions to take full control of those schools. Next thing Mohammed people would do is to start appointing muslims as principals of mission schools. They would claim it is public schools.

Government schools are for all, Christians or Muslims.

The best thing is for the government to ban any religious activity, Christianity or Islam.
Anyone who wants to practise any religion should do that under his/her father’s roof. After all, Nigeria is a secular nation the last time I checked

The schools ain't Christian schools but public schools, so why will they oppose the user of hijab?
They said the Christian bodies are already in court working on how to reclaim the schools. So they should wait till when they get the school back before they can tag those schools Christian and then ban the use of hijab.
Moreso, there are also many Islam themed schools that have also been taken by the govt and hijab is never made compulsory for all students just because those schools belong to the govt and not to the Muslim societies. The Muslims can also only make compulsory use of hijab for all students only after recovering the schools from the govt.

The thank you that Muslims will tell us for actually bringing education to their door step is ' the use of hijab'. They should go to their boring ansarudeen school and let Christians be. We will not accept terrorists in our schools coz all Muslims are potential terrorists. The girls using hijab can be used as suicide bombers. The govt should as a matter of urgency return back the schools to mission, we are able and capable . I hope the terrorist governor of kwara state can see this

The moment all these activities started in school, the school partially becomes a religious centre.

What's with Nigerians and religious activities everywhere?

Schools, Board Room meetings, recreation parks, etc

If it's so important then go to a Muslim school instead.
But wait why will u wanna use that in a Christian school in d first place ? The school cannot change to meet ur requirement; Hence, you meet d school requirements and procedures. If it those not suit ur religious bliv then look elsewhere. You cannottell mii on how to run ma business, by the way: mayb someone needs to remind them that it's not owned by d government.

Religion and ethnicity are the major banes of this country. It becomes more prominent in states where the two major religions/tribes have almost equal population. The person at the helms of affair tend to tilt towards his religion/ethnicity when matters like this arise.

In a secular country, there should be a uniform not leaning towards any religion or religious beliefs in government/public schools, but here in Nigeria reverse is the case.

I still don't understand why Islam is so intolerant, can they accept a Christian fellowship in a Muslim school? Your guess is as good as mine.

I remember when Christians in Kwara joined the Fulanis to be shouting 'Otoge' out of hate for a cosmopolitan Bukola Saraki and ensure that anyone who is closely linked to him did not win any post.
Today Bukola Saraki's Senate is regarded as one of the best which never kowtowed to the executive, there was real separation of powers.
I also recall them calling anyone who did not support Otoge as IPOB 'terrorist'.
Today it seems those who saw ahead that Otoge was borne out of hatred and not geared towards the general good and growth of Kwara have been vindicated. Bukola Saraki walks around with pride because today we are ashamed of the rubber stamp we have as Senate which approves everything even before the president sends it to them and the kind of backward governance we see in Kwara state which has spent weeks fighting over hijab and not the general well-being of the people.

The question to 'Otogeists' now is how far? You have elected religious fundamentalists into power, meanwhile Kwara state boasts of the largest number of BEGGARS in one location in Nigeria, there is a thread on that topic here.
Kwara is also a hotbed for religious extremists more than Sokoto and Kano combined shocked

Its a mission school for a reason why would the state government be involved in decisions in mission school?

Any parent that can't abide by a mission school rules whether Christian or Muslim should go and enrol their children in a school that suits their faith....

If the government has a problem with the rules of the mission schools then they should pull out their funds if they have any in funds in the running of the school, government should not be involved in the affairs of mission schools....

I just hope this won't lead to the burning of the schools overnight the Ilorin I know have a lot extremists waiting to be unleashed, I just hope the government is sensible enough to handle this properly.....

what exactly are you saying? Cause you ain't making no fvcking sense.

Let Muslims attend Muslim schools and leave secular and Christian schools rather than enforcing their religious practice on others.
This was what I was expecting you to say.

This is no issue, but I think the governor is being sympathetic to the Muslim students
*First they should return the schools to the mission
*Second,Muslim students should respect the laws of the school
*Hijab should not be forced.on private schools
