Twenty countries contain areas that could soon experience famine in the coming months without urgent and scaled-up assistance, a report has said.

The places prone to imminent and famine are Yemen, South Sudan and Northern Nigeria, UN food agencies have said.

According to the joint report by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) “Hunger hotspots FAO-WFP early warnings on acute food insecurity March to July 2021 outlook” published on Tuesday, “acute hunger is set to soar in over 20 countries in the coming months without urgent and scaled-up assistance.”

According to the report, people in Yemen, South Sudan and Northern Nigeria remain most at risk of rising and dangerously high acute food insecurity.

“In Burkina Faso, food security has slightly improved since last October, but the situation is still very concerning.

“Some 2.7 million Burkina Faso are projected to face high acute food insecurity between June and August 2021, a sharp increase from 700,000 in 2019 before violence escalated in the west Africa nation,” it said.

In Yemen, continued violence and economic decline as well as severe disruption to the humanitarian response are likely to persist over the coming months.

“Over 16 million Yemenis are expected to face high levels of acute food insecurity by June 2021, an increase of some 3 million since the end of last year,” the report said.

According to the report, in conflict-hit northern Nigeria, projections for the June – August lean season show that the number of people in the emergency level of acute food insecurity is likely to almost double to over 1.2 million, since the same period last year.

“In the next six months, food and nutrition insecurity is set to rise considerably in northern Nigeria with some 13 million people affected unless food and livelihood assistance is scaled up,” it said.

Already, over 34 million people are grappling with emergency levels of acute hunger (IPC4) meaning they are one step away from starvation across the world.

Other countries identified by the report as amongst the worst hunger hotspots where life-threatening hunger is on the rise are Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Haiti, The Sudan and Syria Arab Republic.

In the report, the FAO director-general, QU Dongyu said “The magnitude of suffering is alarming.

“It is incumbent upon all of us to act now and to act fast to save lives, safeguard livelihoods and prevent the worst situation,” he warned.

“In many regions, the planting season has just started or is about to start.

“We must run against the clock and not let this opportunity to protect, stabilise and even possibly increase local food production slip away,” Mr Dongyu urged.

“We are seeing a catastrophe unfold before our very eyes. Famine driven by conflict and fuelled by climate shocks and the COVID 19 hunger pandemic is knocking on the door for millions of families,” the executive director of WFP, David Beasley said in the report.

UN is starting to sound unreasonable, did you see the amount of food coming of the North, its so much they are exporting to Cameroon and Mali to sell.

UN should stop that nonsense and come down to supervise our referendum before we put the entire West Africa in chaos

This stats are assumptions, they are not supposedly painting the picture of the Now but wat might happen latter

We do not pray for evil on anyone but hope you understand that famine is not about how much and well you plant, but rather the disability for you to reap wat you sow.

Un will not just come and split anything when amidst our midst we have not resolved to split anything

I was telling an ipob member here dat the only time the Fg will take seccession seriously is when the democratically elected leaders from the region and the traditional ruler of the region fronts it . I was given insults.

Why not form a coalition and bombard our leaders in the South with seizeless and breathtaking protest and add fire for them to feel uncomfortable with the situation on ground and get them to champion our course to the FG

then the FG will know this is not business as usual

mind you the FG is used to seccessionist insurrections, terror and militancy

but if we are able to get Our leaders both traditional and political to fall in Line our Movement and interest, the FG will wet their pants

I tell you the moment one Group in this Country have their political and traditional leaders declare seccession that will be the end of this failed union bcus no section apart from the one we know will fight for this Union again.
if we don't toll this line the FG will continually tag criminality to every struggle from every section.

we can choose another option which is wait and pray for the country to self destruct
then the leaders will have no choice than to dance to the music of the moment

other countries will start taking action immediately but my Nigeria will first form a committee or panel of enquiry to know which states in the north the famine will affect most...then they will investigate if its lack of rain, pests or terrorists that will cause the famine....then they will bring it to the floor of the Senate to pass first, second, ,third n even fifth readings, while billions of naira is being voted in the panel for one man to pocket and tell the nation not to be live the U.N. ...

Nigeria I hail thee!

Re: Northern Nigeria, Yemen, South Sudan, Others Face Famine Threat - UN by sinkhole: 5:09am On Mar 25, 2021
This is the real fake news!
Is it not the Northern Nigeria that just blocked food from being transported to the Southern part while they export humongous amount of food to Niger, Mali, Chad and Cameroon?
The UN personnel that put up that report must be either Yoruba or Igbo grin

Yemen and south sudan is competing with the northern nigerian lols, upon say the southern nigeria has not block the passage of ferlitizer that are been imported yhrough our ports. If we decide to reciprocate the gesture of food blockade done by the wreched north recently then no hausa fulani man will be able to write anythi g on facebook talkless of nairaland because people like thebosstrevor, arewa, quotasystem will be at united nations food program camp struggling to get their daily ration so that they wonts die of hunger lols. The north is nothing without the south because the southern nigeria is naturally blessed with everything even good soil for agriculture we get am pass the poor-wreached-accursed north.

When you sow wind, you reap the whirlwind. That is the case of Northern Nigeria.

Israel and UAE are both desert lands, much more barren than Northern Nigeria but when you have poor managers of resources, things like this are bound to happen. Coupled with the fact that people in Northern Nigeria act more Moslem than Mohammed and more religious than Dubai and Saudi Arabia which are frontmost Moslem nations who practice their reliousity with some sense.

As a fall out of religious intolerance in Northern Nigeria fully enabled by their leaders, so much innocent blood have been spilled on the soils in that region. It is only natural for the earth to refuse to give out its produce in protest or for the firmament to refuse to shed its soothing drops of water.

I hope they won't see reason t
