Why Are Nigerian Villages So Ugly Compared To Other Countries? by Aconomist: 11:52am On Mar 29, 2021
The biggest problem in Nigeria is that most of the people don't understand beauty and harmony. Everything in the country is monkey-ish and scatter-scatter. The people generally don't take time to beautify and decorate their living spaces -- leading to ugly environments wherever Nigerians inhabit.

Compare villages in Nigeria to other parts of the world. The first image is a typical Nigerian village. The second image is a village in Northern Europe.

This Is How It All Started:
In 1825 The First Indigenous Town Planners Migrated From Their Village To The City,
After Trekking For 24 Days They Finally Arrived In A City Called Potiskum(in Present Day Lagos) At Around 9:45 PM.
They Were Warmly Welcome By The Townsmen, It Was At This Point They Swear Never To Go Back To The Village Again.
Barely A Month After Their Arrival News Broke In That Lord Luggard Wanted To Learn How To Drive His New Horse But There Was No Viable Road For Him To Drive In..
It Was At This Point That The Town Planners Went And Buy The First Gun Powder In Nigeria...
But That Is Another Story Am Not A Story Teller grin

When Compairing Nigerian Vilages With Any European Counterparts
Perhabs These Are The Few Reason Ours Look Dirtier Ane Untidy:
- Building Style
- Types Of Materials Used In Building
- Sanitation Culture Of The Vilagers
- Occupation Practiced There
- Level Of Isolation (road Links)
- General Lifestlye
- Type Of Climate (mostly Rainy Compaired To Europe)
- Population Size
BTW Most European Country Side Have Access To Electricity, But Ours Is Opposite.
-Zero Security Concern.
-Zero Village Planning grin
Las Las Most Of Our Major Cities Is Not Even As Good As European Villages.
This Culture Of Substandard Settlement Is In Our Blood.
Thats Why Too Much Amadioha And Egungun Is Being Practised There.

Nigerians get mad when Europeans call you monkeys and look down on you. But why do you chose to live like animals instead of beautifying your environment? What is so hard about performing basic improvements like painting your house?

Here is another Nigerian village vs a remote village in Norway. Guess which one is the Nigerian village.

When you can't even make a simple village look decent, how do you expect to maintain a full city?

All this still have to do with Government.

Town planning is dead in Nigeria. Where some of this villagers wan see money sef. Most of them are farmers with no single support from the government.

Everything get to do with Money. Person wey no get money to chop nah him go dey think of painting abi? Is okay.

Where did the government come from -- are they not Nigerians? Monkeys will be ruled by monkeys. The villages in these foreign countries are poor also. Instead of buying palm wine, a generator or an old TV like the Nigerians, they first use their small money to make sure their environment looks habitable.

They have relatives abroad sending them thousands of dollars. It doesn't matter how many millions you lavish on a Nigerian, he will still be uncivilized. Even Victoria island looks like a zoo and that is the richest part of Nigeria.

When Nigerians are raised in villages that look like zoo habitats, why do you expect them to suddenly learn civilization when they get into politics? All of Nigeria's problems started in these villages.

Well, Nigeria is burdened by overpopulation. That sense that norrin really matters but to eat and Bleep. The basic instincts is what rules every Nigeria once the colonialists left.

Dear Op what have you done to beautify your village? Everybody complains, everybody compares Nigeria to other countries, but nobody is prepared to do there own little bit. Let me tell you in most developed countries, ordinary people do a lot of thing outside of govt. In Nigeria everybody just wants to be an armchair critic.
I recommend you watch the movie 'the boy who harnessed the wind' See how one boy in Malawi made a difference that saved his village from famine. We all need to start being the change we want to see

@OP.

If you don't insult Nigerians routinely and mercilessly then perhaps you would get better responses to your posts which are totally bereft of decorum even though not totally without merit.

When you start from a position of hating and looking down on Nigerians/Africans, even though you are one yourself, then you cannot provide solutions for them that your better education and exposure should naturally predispose you to doing.

The simple and uncomplicated reality is that development, education, socio-economic sufficiency and basic modernity spreads to every corner in the West whereas the opposite is the case in Africa where leaders develop cities and towns while neglecting villages completely.

Trying to change that reality , by creating awareness of it, would be the outlook of an educated solutions providers not insulting villagers in Nigeria who have never really been given the tools to make more of what they have and must live with.

Let me give you an example that should put things in perspective for you. In the west there are usually not many illiterates in rural areas and villages whereas in Nigeria illiteracy is rife in villages and rural areas.

Clearly, socio-economically empowered people, with access to better education and wealth, can build the more functional and visually appealing rural areas you cite.

Your post made me laugh, especially your first and second image comparisons. Beyond this, your post does not tell the whole story, which is typical when stories are told about Nigeria and Nigerians by foreigners that are either indignant (whites) that Nigerians don’t carry themselves like inferior beings but are liable to talk down to them or they (blacks) are hateful towards Nigerians because blacks tend to want to pull down other blacks that, rightly or wrongly, they perceive as better than they are.

The story you don’t tell in this case is the fact that Nigeria ethnic cultures are and were often more advanced than ethnic cultures you might find in other African nations. For example, the so-called Brown tin roofs that some mock Yourba tribes with, predates colonialism. I may be wrong, but I think this is correct. In order words, these Yourba Nigerians have been living in what you’d recognise as modern towns before the whites came to Africa as colonisers. During this time, Africans in other nations were living in mud huts and in many cases are still living in mud-hut-villages today. The Benin people of Nigeria also where living in comparative modern structures compared to the rest of Africa.

Today, you’d be had pressed to find primordial type villages in any apart of Nigeria. I believe there are some in the North and maybe some along the Nigeria Cameroon highland borders. However, generally, unlike much of Africa where mud-hot type villages abound just outside the main cities, this does not exist in Nigeria. Villages even in the most remote parts of Nigeria have evolved into towns. The state system Nigeria practices has resulted in deep-reaching urbanisation. Sure, many of these state capitals and rural towns could do with better infrastructure but Nigeria is a more indebt developed nation than 90 percent of black African nations, if not all save South Africa perhaps.

The first step in fixing a problem is admitting it exists and taking responsibility. After that, the problem will solve itself. It's just like a man who smells bad. Once he knows that he is stinking and accepts that he is dirty, the next step is bathing.

How is he creating awareness placing blame wrongly? Would anyone expect a 12 year old boy to be an effective breadwinner for a family of 5?

Point is that Villagers in Nigeria are not empowered to build anything more sophisticated than the little they have allow them deliver.

Very basic shelter , not aesthetics, is the primary motivation for building structures in Nigerian Villages.

Which is what he is pointing out. Why would a low income country such as Rwanda have a nicer village and are more concerned about aesthetics than Nigeria?

Aethestics in village settlements is what defines civilisations. The aesthetics is seen in the wall markings, pottery design , baking hearth build up e.tc.

Why has nigerian villages deteriorated to this level. Before and during colonialism, villages are distinct in their small unique markings on walls, door portals and structure. The colonials commented on how villages in Awka and benin are so well swept and marked in rich carvings for each household.

Are you saying, our ancestors have no view on aesthetics, that they were mostly concerned about basic living structures, are you saying no one was poor amongst our ancestors?

Poverty is not an excuse for languid living.

I have been in households that are barely managing with threadbare furnishings yet they were tidy as phuck

Our villages never used to look like this pre-independence! What you see today is part of the effects of us letting go of our values and culture due to the overwhelming influence of a self-governed, post-independence Nigeria that was awash in petrodollars!
