Prominent Nigerians, among them Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Chief Bode George, former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Professor Aloysius-Michael Okolie, Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), have said that the structure of the country is faulty and only restructuring will save the country from collapse.

They spoke at a book launch in Lagos on Wednesday, stressing that Nigeria had not made progress in the past 60 years because the structure under which it operated was bad.

While reviewing the book with the title, “Roundtable Discussion on Economy in Nigeria” which was edited by Billy Adedaramola, editor-in-chief of National Pilot Newspaper, Prof. Aloysius-Michael Okolie said that restructuring flows from the dynamic nature of social reality, inevitable and sweeps across generation.

“Restructuring is a synonym of change arising from contests between the social relations of production and productive forces. The intensity and dynamism of agitation for restructuring in any given socio-formations is directly linked to the quantum of governance deficits and level of dexterity by the political leadership in dealing with the challenges of governance. When restructuring, akin to change becomes truncated and resisted, it leads to internal bobbles and perhaps makes violence and instability expedient, inevitable and permissible.”

The Ooni of Ife represented by Oba Adebisi Layede said that restructuring is long overdue; stressing that there is so many defects in the structure because Nigerians have forgotten history, regretting that history is no longer taught in schools for the people to know where they were.

“Nigeria is not one. We deceive ourselves when we say that Nigeria is one. Some regions of this country are seen as second class, so restructuring must be done to save Nigeria from collapse,” he said.

Bode George, represented by Dr Aderemi Akitoye, a member board of trustees of the PDP, said that restructuring and the economy cannot be separated.

He said, “The structure that we have is defective. If we must grow to the status of a nation we must restructure. If the Yoruba nation wants to go, it is also restructuring. The economy of Nigeria is tribal, it is meant to benefit the North alone. We must look at all the sectors if we want to restructure. If restructuring involves severance, let there be severance.”

Also the privilege that Nigerian can live anywhere they like without proper documentation should be remove this will enable the stranger to respect their host.

Also Ecowas constitution should be revisit because free Visa to all Ecowas members is doing harm than good to Nigeria.
