EKSU Alumni Carpets Management, Fayemi Over Proscription Of Staff Unions by AishaYesufu: 12:31pm On Apr 25, 2021
...describes action as Terror

Social Secretary of Ekiti State Chapter of Ekiti State University, EKSU Alumni, Mr. Adebisi Adeola has described the recent proscription of National Association of Academic Technologist (NAAT), Non-Academic Staff Unions (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), as an act of terrorism by the management of the University by extension of Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

The management had announced the proscription of all the labour unions upon their concerns and demands from Ekiti State Government.

Adebisi, who condemned in strong term, the manners at which EKSU management goes above handling issues that bothers on academics and welfare of students and staffs since about two years ago, calls for urgent attention of critical stakeholders to salvage the reputation of the University and Academic session to avoid another set back.

"The news came as a shock and blow on every right thinking products of the University. It has never happened in the history of Ekiti State University to have Labour Unions proscribed due to lawful agitations and infrastructural demands from state government and management".

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Eddy Olanipekun, and Council Chairman, Prof. Bamitale Omole who were once union leaders, have yet again shown flagrant to the ethics of Comradeship. One would have expected a smooth and strong chemistry between the management and leaders of Labour Unions, given the uniqueness in their ideologies.

It is on record that EKSU Governing Council, on the instruction of Dr. Kayode Fayemi, ordered the sack of over 1000 staffs of the University who were duly employed and promoted in 2019.

"Some of these staffs were employed for accreditation of various Departments in 2016".

Peaceful protest is a fundamental right of every individual, which should not be seen as bad omen in a democratic setting. The Labour Unions are not surrogates under the state government or management, they are independent bodies that protect and promote the interest of their members.

Fayemi and his toothless bulldogs should be told that any further closure of the University after the unavoidably COVID-19 pandemic that led to the lockdown of the all Universities, will not only jeopardize the future of EKSU students, but the entirety of the system.

It is important to note that, the unions, most especially the ASUU only gave 4 weeks ultimatum which lapsed on 22nd of April, for management to address salient issues and demands and yet to commence any industrial strike against the position of the Management.

When did agitation become a crime?

Government they say is a continuum, it is on record that Governor Fayemi owed the University 3 months subvention before he left in 2014, while his successor, added 2 months, making 5 months in 2018. Apart from the aforementioned, the management and Fayemi are yet to respond to;

1. Non-payment of 3 months' Salary arrears, earned allowances and cooperative deductions for Non-Academic Staffs,

2. 6 years arrears of earned Academic allowances;

3. 26 months of unremitted pension deductions and;

4. 14 months arrears of half salaries.

Instead of peaceful dialogue between the worring Union Leaders, management and Ekiti state government, the management swiftly, and childishly proscribed the unions.

Calling on other sister Associations, EKSU Alumni and Student Union governmet to defend the institution from impeding collapse, Adebisi said the management can reciprocate the terror on them if they fail to lend their voices.
