Gov. Ayade’s Defection: Why APC Must Not Celebrate Yet by akpanoka: 2:10pm On May 20, 2021
This afternoon, the Governor of Cross River State, Prof. Ben Ayade defected to the ruling APC. The move which took place in the Calabar, the state capital, was witnessed by some prominent members of the APC including Buni, Fayemi, Uzodinma and Silva, the Minister of State Petroleum. Meanwhile, his defection did not come as a surprise as he has been severally accused of hobnobbing with the APC. Recently, he threatened to leave the party, alleging that he was being unjustly treated by the PDP. Today, the APC celebrates his defection. But does the man have any electoral or financial value? Certainly not.

Gov. Ayade’s travail became pronounce when he failed to deliver during the ward and Local Government Congresses. Stakeholders in the party allegedly saw him as a monumental failure and decided to rescue the party. It was gathered that he could not even produce ward and LGA EXCOs in Obudu LGA, where he hails from. His attempt to arm-twist the party leadership to nullify the congress failed. The matter became worse when the Supreme Court validated the outcome of the congress, leaving him politically stranded. The Umbrella was taken away from him.

The leadership of the party delayed the state congress with a view to finding a soft landing for him, but that didn’t work. I must observe that the young man is the architect of his political misfortune. He reportedly handed over the administration of the state to his brother FRANK. It is on record that his brother singlehandedly installed all the eighteen LG Chairmen without usual consultation or primaries. Even in LGA where prominent party leaders exist, they were not consulted. In most cases, decisions of party caucuses were jettisoned. Why won’t they gang up against him?

The last episode was the northern senatorial district bye-election. Note that Ayade had represented the District before becoming a governor. His candidate was overwhelmingly rejected. The appeal court affirmed one J Agom, a House of Reps Member as winner of the Primaries, a decision that was subsequently upheld by the Supreme Court. Why he has not been sworn in by the Senate would become clearer in the coming days. But why would a Governor not be able to produce a senator in his own district?
The answer is simple. HIS SCORE CARD. When a sitting Governor fails to woo the electorates to vote for his candidate, then he has apparently been rejected by his own people. It is clear that a relatively unknown young man pursued him out of PDP. If he can’t deliver a Senatorial District, what value would he then add to his new group? Financially the state is broke. All the English-coated budgets since inception of his administration have not been fulfilled. All signature projects abandoned. Existing roads that were assisting motorists have been destroyed and the hope of new ones almost dashed. The truth is Cross Rivers is suffering. LGA Chairmen are lamenting. Councilors are crying. Calabar that use to be one of the most beautiful cities is now a shadow of itself.

APC has work to do, if Cross River must truly become its state. The party must assist him to deliver. Well, since it is a party of the progressives, maybe he would learn how progressive policies are formulated and implemented. But for now, a Governor that can deliver five LGAs cannot bring anything to the table.

Make you people continue to dey deceive una self.. More than average Southern politicians irrespective of their party affiliation all want power to return to any of the Southern region..

Pdp's body language is saying otherwise hence reason why mostly Southerners are moving away from the party.. I am expecting the likes of Ipkeazu to join Apc this year.

Pdp is gone as a party in Nigeria

As far as the people of Cross River are concerned, the governor is on his own. Cross River remains PDP state.

Another proof that Nairaland is a PDP forum and Seun knows this very well. Now add Ayade (your former friend) to the list of governors this forum and its minions are hell bent on destroying. You have severely wounded the brands of Oshiomole, El-rufai, Tinubu, Amaechi, Okorocha, etc, and evenly lately Umahi who used to be among your heroes until recently. Keep doing that while you, at the same time, promote the PDP, their governors and supporters. Hope Uzodinma is a "supreme court" governor, but the governors in Zamfara, Bayelsa and Rivers are not "supreme court" governors in the views of the OPs you constantly promote here. This platform does not belong to Seun. It belongs to FFK, Reno Omokri, "Lekki Massacre" fake news purveyors, Sheik Gumi, Nnamdi Kanu, Sunday Igboho, and all the people who wish Nigeria dies just to entertain themselves and their followers. Off course Seun and his moderators go to the banks smiling while they claim the OPs are fully responsible for what they post here. Are the OPs responsible for pushing thrash to the front page? However, always remember that one day, there will be fewer ignorant people in Nigeria than those who would not be. And then, history will summon you all to explain the role you played destroying the once promising Nigeria.

What happened to Akpabio will happen to him full scale..... He has been reduced to nothing in the state before he decamped.... 85% of Cross Riverians knew he was going to decamp surely .. But it have little or no effect on the PDP in the state

Ayade has long left PDP. I just wonder why the PDP didn't expel him before now. They knew he was leaving, but PDP leaders were trying to persuade him to stay. That's was never going to work.
