Most geologist work either as WASH specialist or WASH Engineers, or geotechnical engineers.....either with UNICEF, UNOPS, UNHCR, other UN organizations hire geologist on project basis as consultants.

Thank you for helping the Op answer most of the questions.

I’m a graduate of philosophy with 2.2 from Urban University of Rome.

Do I stand a chance?

It’s unfortunate that Nigerians don’t believe that someone can help. I have friends working at UN agencies and almost all of them were recruited through LinkedIn or help from persons like this. I’m not vouching for the person of the Op, if you are interested set up a LinkedIn account, subscribe to these UN agencies, follow Op’s Steps but if she demands for cash.... just ignore her. Write papers and recommendations to issues around you. Everyone wants to work with the UN; however, many cannot profer solutions to issues around them. The UN does not employ liabilities but folks with solutions with issues.
Well done Op
The question is what help is the op rendering exactly?
In this age we're in. A phantom name claiming on the net to work with UN and offering to "help" should be viewed with utmost caution and suspicion.

How old can one be to get employed in the service? I mean is there any age limit to recruitment?

Age most times is not a criteria for getting a job in the UN.

I have a skill acquisition/youth development scheme in form of business idea, UN and other international organizations as well as NGOs can adopt and help youths and make money as well..

Most times you need to get information on youth innovation/ entrepreneur ship via the official webpage of the UN agencies eg UNICEF, WHO, UNHCR, follow them on LinkedIn, Instagram, twitter, check out their official website for information on these.

I am a Female Nigerian in my early thirties and have been working @ the UN for several years.

This thread has been created to answer specific questions you may have about working in the UN.

I have been working from home since the beginning of the pandemic and my days are always extremely busy ; juggling official duties with domestic responsibilities as a wife and mother cry. Notwithstanding, I will try my best to select serious questions and provide comprehensive feedback that will help you kick start your journey in this regard.

As the thread progresses, I shall be posting vacancies from several UN/international organisations in Nigeria, and also provide support with helping you to brand your CV for international organisations like the UN, but not limited to the UN.

Please note that this thread is for serious minded peeps only and comments irrelevant to the purpose of this (life changing) thread will be overlooked.

I studied economics in school. Pls what are the positions someone like me can apply? I applied for a volunteering job but I have not gotten any response from them, how long does it take for UN or their affiliate organizations to respond to applications? Lastly pls what professional qualification(s) can give me an edge over other candidates to be the best fit for any position related to my field of study? Thank you

Rightly said, there's been a lot of misconstrued information out there about getting a job or working with the UN, it's a good thing you created the thread to sensitize job seekers on how to identify potential paths of joining the UN/Development world, I also have had a stint with the UN & I will be willing to share my experiences as well for the benefit of the job seeking community.....I will let the @op take the the questions already posted, I can come in to complement... smiley

NB: I wouldn't respond to DMs for personal reasons, but you can ask your questions in the thread for the benefit of others & I will try my best to support @OP in responding to your questions in the thread.

Aside medical practitioners ( Doctor & Nurses), Social & Development workers and Logistics & supply professionals, what other profession is highly regarded at the UN?

Having worked with NRC and DRC as field enúmerator and other small NGOs in Adamawa state..
Please what am i not getting right..

Ok, I think you need to properly structure your resume, with your feild experience, include keywords listed in the advertised position in your resume, as most 1st stage selection process is done via the use of a dedicated recruitment software, if the software does not find the listed keywords in your resume, it sends your resume to the trash.......so you need to work more on your resume.

Most medical doctors join the UN as public health specialist, very few tow the line of actual medicine & surgery as they rarely have the opportunity to practice it in the UN......you might want to tow the path of public health to get into the system.

That's fantastic.

Thanks a lot.

Its not possible to jump into the UN rank and file without getting the basics right. There's always a first break in. It could be a local NGO addressing one of the SDGs.

This ebook "How to Break into International Development" may be of help.

Sorry about that, in most cases like these, either there's an issue with the proposed funding source, as your salary would have been taken care of by the funds, but I guess the expected funds to support the role you were being recruited for did not materialize as planned. It's sad that they didn't get back to you on this.

Thanks for this explanation. It really explains a lot. I think it'll be good if the organisations give these feedbacks to the candidates instead of just ghosting them. I had a similar experience with CHAI. Haven't heard from them since June 2020 after the lady said I should expect their feedback in about two weeks.

I have an offer from a United Nations agency.

The application process took almost a whole year

1. Did an online skills assessment.

2. Did a video interview - you get a question... you have a 5 minute window to upload your answers.

3. A brutal language proficiency interview. grin

It's not that bad, but dont exaggerate your level of proficiency.

I got interviewed in French (advanced) and Spanish & Arabic (basic)

4. Final panel interview. 3 senior staff.

Corona pandemic disrupted resumption. I should have gone to Rome..

I have friends here in UNICEF, WFP, UNDP and WHO.

You keep applying and applying, be introspective - i.e. be brutally honest with yourself - "what am I lacking?" and work on it.

I didn't get my Offer on the first try.... I didn't for some time wink NEVER GIVE UP!

All roles a highly crucial to UN operations, masters degree is not a requisite for any role in the UN, but it can give you an advantage......UN is more interested in your hands-on feild/work experience.
