Getting A Job In The Oil Industry With A Third Class: How Possible? by JARUSHUB: 12:54pm On Apr 27, 2018
Recently, we got an enquiry on the possibility of a third class graduate getting a job in the oil and gas industry.

Hello JarusHub,

My name is Tosin. I’m from Kwara State. I messed up big time while studying Civil Engineering in one of Nigeria’s second generation universities. By bagging a THIRD CLASS degree. A couple of factors contributed to it, but those are just mere excuses. The bottom line is that I messed my life up.

But I know it’s never too late, no matter how late, to start a positive journey of progress. That’s where I need your candid opinion.

I want to still get an oil and gas job. Everybody I talked to has said it is not even remotely possible, but something within me tells me it’s still possible.

So, tell me, is it still possible to get an oil and gas job? If yes, what are the action steps you’ll require of me to take to move close to my goal.

Thanks and God bless.

Tosin

Dear Tosin,

First, I have always said that the Oil & Gas industry is not the only industry and the fixation of our graduates on the sector is a bit misplaced. This I discussed extensively in this article I wrote months back.

That said, there is nothing wrong in seeking to get job there.

Now, to your question: the answer is YES. There is no rule that says a third class graduate cannot get job in the oil industry. There are definitely third class graduates there.

But the challenge: it is a highly competitive industry where best graduates from best schools compete. Herein lies the issue.

At entry level, companies specify the acceptable class of degree, and, unfortunately, for almost 100% of them, third class is hardly included. In fact, it is only in very few cases that the boundary is extended to second class lower. This is even the shortlisting process, before the competition for place by way of tests and interviews begins.

At experienced level position, class of degree hardly matters, so that may be one possible route.

Yet, I wont say you can’t get job in the industry despite this deficit. There is nothing that is impossible. Few as they may be, I’m sure there are third class grads in the industry, so that’s why I said yes, you can. I have mentioned the experienced hire route, which I must say, is also a tight route except you’re very exceptional where you were coming from or you’re headhunted.

There is also the contract route. Some third party contractors provide contract staff to oil companies, and the oil companies hardly check their qualifications, since they relate with their contractors (employers) directly and relationship is not that of employee. Those contract manpower suppliers are not so strict in their qualifications pegging, since they are recruiting as contract staff, so maybe they consider third class grads too. After years of experience as contract staff, your experience and network in the industry may be useful in landing your permanent job in an oil company, disregarding your academic deficit.

Finally, don’t be fixated with the oil industry, as even first class grads are not guaranteed place. Extend your search.

Pile of shit!!!

There are two ways it can be possible...

1) Let a politician recommend you

2) Let your father be the Managing Director or know any top official.

First class graduates are finding it difficult, e remain Third-class...

You said it yourself that you messed up. You get third you con dey reason oil and gas grin you no try. Even people with 1st and 2.1 class don dey comot eyes. You no even reason N-Power. Except if you have long legs and hands it's almost foolish to say that a third class will get an oil and gas job in Nigeria. So you knew you were going for an oil and gas job while you were in school and you toiled with your academic performance.

Pick yourself up and start from the scratch and stop living in mirage of what you never worked for. I'm only being blunt and realistic

Lol..Jarus be mincing words. The answer is a straight-faced NO!

But I'd agree with you that the unnecessary fixation in working at oil firms is becoming annoying. He studied Civil Engr, he should be inquiring about the possibility of working with the premium construction firms; the likes of Julius Berger, Capa and D'Arberto, Arab Const, Elalan and others.

Luckily for him, Civil Engr is a hands-on course and that is what you need to advise him on; let him get on the field and grab some hands-on experience in building and construction. It must not be with the premium companies, he can start with the no-name construction companies and build his way up.

Third class ke? We with the 2nd class self know wetin we see; abi na dis one wey first class full everywhere. Oil companies self don dey limit their intake to oversea graduates before dem begin consider first-class for naija university.

You stand a better chance if you go for skills/certificate courses like welding, safety, crane operator, escavator, grinder, etc. Oil companies employ more of skilled workers than the so called 1st class and 2nd class. Too bad people that knows nothing about oil company operations are the ones giving advice about employment in the oil industry

It is possible as detailed in JARUSHUB response.
1.Experience Hire
2. Contract Job
Getting sought after certifications needed for the industry may also be an advantage.

There are a lot number of persons working in the oil and gas industry without a tertiary education, come to chevron fields, most of the field personnel running wireline, pumping, wellhead etc are not graduate or graduates with a top tie degree. It is very possible if you got the right link. There is a place for everyone in the oil and gas industry.

You can either enroll on a specialist postgraduate course such as Drilling, Pipeline, Offshore Engineering ...
or
Find a way to work your way up by applying for the lowest available jobs (Roustabout, floorhand ...) then enhance your skillset by taking specialist courses which should help overtime

The dude read civil engineering and with a third class, no oil company is going to employ you except with many years experience in construction industry with added certificate.
My advice, as a civil engineer what ever you left school with does not stop you from practicing the noble profession, what stops you is when you don't know your onion as a civil engineer.
