Obama Considers Visiting Nigeria by Bintus2much(m): 10:27pm On Apr 30, 2011
Obama considers Nigerian visit

Nigeria may have started reaping the benefits of organising a free and fair election as the country has been selected to host President Barack Obama during his Africa trip in a few months.
Obama’s administration had made conducting a free and fair poll a condition for a presidential visit.
Sources said administration officials are discussing with their Nigerian counterparts on the details of the visit, including security, accommodation and places of historical interest Obama will visit while in the country.
White House sources said the administration is impressed with the outcome of the polls and believes a presidential visit will further deepen Nigeria’s democratic credentials and push other countries in the sub-region towards a democratic path. “The outcome of the polls makes it easier for the administration to make the case to other nations on the need to allow their people to freely choose their leaders,” administration officials stated.
“The President believes this reverses a downward slide of democracy in the country,” officials told Sunday Independent.
The White House is not alone is applauding the election. The U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Johnnie Carson, who represented Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, as an election observer concluded the election marks a new direction for Nigeria.
“This reverses a downward democratic trajectory and provides the country a solid foundation for strengthening its electoral procedures and democratic institutions in the years to come. The Nigerian people have shown to the world their resilience and will to have their voices heard. These elections were a real opportunity to choose their leaders,” he said. Despite what he called “some technical imperfections,” Carson said these elections are a substantial improvement over Nigeria’s seriously flawed 2007 vote. “Following the deplorable post-election violence of the previous week, we are heartened that many Nigerian voters went to the polls to vote in an environment largely free of violence. We remain concerned about allegations of fraud and ballot box snatching in various jurisdictions, and we strongly urge Nigerian authorities to investigate and take corrective actions on all of these allegations,” he stated.
The administration said it welcomes President Goodluck Jonathan’s promise of a judicial commission of inquiry which will investigate post-electoral violence.
The administration said it is watching other developments, especially the re-run in parts of Imo State and urged electoral authorities not to allow the outcome of that election to mar the success of the previous polls.

An "eyes open" relationship with the US will be of immense benefit to Nigeria' World standing and development. We must welcome Obama with open arms, he is one of ours and must be made to feel at home. We must also have minutely detailed plans, policies and guidelines for any relationship with the US.

The US can help us in quite a few technological areas if the flow of oil is guaranteed.
Of massively greater importance though, is the diplomatic clout the US brings to the table as a member of the security council. For years now, there has been a clamour for a widening of the security council, with the two contenders for Africa being Nigeria and SA.
Nigeria needs that security council seat, because by making us the undisputed African top dog, it will open all sorts of doors. Nothing will move on the continent without our input.

It goes without saying that SA has always looked the favourite for the spot whenever it becomes available, however in recent times, SA has made several foolish moves on the international scene, they have willingly went against the grain of international opinion in the buildup to the Libyan war, only to double back on themselves; something similar happened in Ivory Coast as well, they challenged Nigeria on our turf, scuttled all talks and sent in a warship, but they lost out badly yet again and ended up fully endorsing the Nigerian position.
SA's constant bumbling in this period makes it an opportune time to woo the US with oil. We can also woo the UK with our market (David Cameron has already strongly expressed optimism).

We can achieve a lot with the right friendships, so long as our eyes remain wide open.

Dont seek greatness. Deserve it.

The security council is not our number one issue now. Lets focus on and solve our problems instead of useless grandstanding around the world.

Nigeria doesn't even have a coherent foreign policy. Getting veto power would be meaningless if we would just follow the west.

It is never too late to develop a coherent foreign policy, indeed the current govt has shown determination to put Nigeria firmly on the Worlds political map.

Without luck, you are only as great as where you set your sights. The countries in the security council don't consider themselves to be grandstanding, so why should we limit our ambitions as grandstanding?
The quality of Nigeria's elections has drawn tremendous international interest, we should be wise to tap it for our benefit.

A nation with few good roads, poor healthcare that seasonally plays host to roving bands of miscreants wants to hold forth over its betters. That thought is very repulsive to me.

Its a deep nigerian problem. thats why you will see people borrow money to sow party uniforms for social events even when they are living hand to mouth.

A thirst for the glamorous superficial over pragmatic daily solutions.

Really?
You will find that a well rounded foreign policy can do a lot to attract trade, investment and development. The seeds of India's economic growth were in a targetted foreign policy and an IT industry that attracted business from the West, today whole new tech industries have grown up around centres like Bangalore. Contrast that with North Korea's sham foreign policy. lol

How many African countries are better or more influential than Nigeria?
I also do not see any logic in your analogy with borrowing money, it cuts like fear of the unknown.

Chill out, first you referred to Obama as an id!ot, and now you don't think Nigeria has any right to aspire to the security council. Dude, relax a bit.

Personally I believe Obama is a great man. However, Nigeria should be careful 'courting' the U.S. during this period in time, which is being marked down in history as being characterized by a blood-thirsty lust for African oil.

very wise advice. Let those who have ears hear. The fact is that U.S only care about their interest (oil in this case). Sadly we have a leadership that really don't care if our resources are sucked dry overnight and any atrocities that may be committed as long as it translate to dollars in their private accounts.

It is definitely a good sign. It represents Nigeria's new significance on the international scene. Would you prefer that nobody wants to visit Nigeria? We do not live in a bubble so I do not expect people to say we do not want or need Obama's visit. Every country has its problems but it doesn't stop them from associating with others. Like it or not Obama's presence in a country speaks volumes!

Good sign/Bad sign. I could care less. I just dont like the way he advertises his presence here in nigeria as some kind of priviledge. Its a sight-seeing trip and we are not even interested. Ofcourse I know you fanboys would like to see him first hand. No problem

As for the Security council ish, lets discuss that later on some other thread.

I `m surprised by some negative opinion from folks about nigerians interest for a UN`s permanent seat.
And strengthening our relationship with the united states, surporting obamas visit to nigeria.

The question is, how can we improve our economy?;We have already started answering that question,The just conclude free and fare election
has a big positive impact in our countries reputation in the outside world, example was the positive burst in our first 500billion dolars eurbond.
Our leaders should focus on how to improve our reputation through reforms that will eradicates coruption to minimum,By doing so, foreign investment will improve in nigeria,
Nigeria has cheap labour, that will atracts foreign investments.this foreign companies are just scared to invest in our country,They makes a lot of consultations through there various embasies before processing investment.
So improving our reputation by improving rules of law, good governace will stregthen our relation in the international comunity, besides it will attract business to our country.
Investor are stanby aiting to see a political radical change in nigeria before they could pour in trilions of dolars into our economy whichj they know is hungry economy.

WE HAVE THE POPULATION.

WHAT THE HECK WILL HIS VISIT AVAIL US?

A MAN STRUGGLING TO PASS AN ORDINARY BILL THROUGH WHOSE RE-ELECTION NEXT YEAR IS ON THE LINE.
THIS OBAMA CHOSE EGYPT OVER NIGERIA LAST TIME IN HIS VISITING SPREE. HIS REFUSAL TO COME DOWN HERE WAS SIMPLY 'ELECTORAL FRAUD' YET HE VISITED EQYPT WHERE THERE WAS NO DEMOCRACY WHERE A SINGLE MUBARAK STAYED FOR THIRTY YEARS! HIS VISIT DIDNT BRING THEM MUCH GOOD AS IT TOOK THE CITIZENS TO RISK THEIR LIVES TO OUSTER MUBARAK A FRIEND TO BARACK.

FOR THOSE HUNGRY PEOPLE WHO EXPECT AN OBAMA OR ANY FOREIGN AID TO CHANGE OUR LOT, THEY WILL BE MET WITH VEHEMENT DISAPPOINTMENT.
REMEMBER HOW PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON VISITED US AND OBASANJO TEMPORARILY DROVE ALL UGLY CARS FROM ABUJA STREETS AND PAINTED ALL THE TREES AND GRASSES GREEN AND WHITE. BILL PROMISED US HEAVEN AND EARTH, HE CAME WITH HUNDREDS OF SELFISH AND UNSERIOUS INVESTORS. WE THOUGHT HE WAS OUR SAVIOUR.
LITTLE DID WE KNOW THAT WEEKS LATER, THIS MAN WOULD HAVE TO STRUGGLE FOR HIS LIFE IN THE HANDS OF ONE TINY OFFICE GIRL CALLED MONICA LEWINSKY

SHINE YOUR EYES, NA WE GO BETTER OUR OWN COUNTRY

This is total bullshit.Odumbo wants to visit Nigeria ,who fxcking cares? His country is broke already that is why he is travelling around the world licking everybody's a.z.z. The USA has fallen from its glory days and he knows it.They deserve what they are getting with all the proxy wars they sponsored on the African soil.

You are extremely naive if your really think that the US will give any African nation a permanent seat on the UN security council. The USA and Israel promised to give the Palestinians 22% of their land back in 1993 but up till today they have not honored that promise .Up till now the USA has turned a blind eye while open Apartheid is practiced by the Israelis against the Palestinians. The west still see us as their slaves so why will they want to give us a seat in the UN security council. The American government and its agents are a cancer in Africa and they should be kicked out.

Africa does not need the USA anymore. If we focus on inter trading within our selves we can sustain our continent. Our biggest problem is corrupt leaders like GEJ and Zuma. Technology you say? What technology ,please don't make me laugh. The geniuses in the US focus more on software development. The real technology comes from from Japan ,South Korea,Australia,China,Taiwan.

The only real formidable technology the USA has today ,is stolen military technology.Yes you heard me right. At least 50% of the USA military technology is stolen from other countries. If they are not stealing from Germany ,they are busy stealing from russia or even South Africa. Believe it or not the Apache helicopter that is used today by the US military is a modified version of the Denel Rooivalk helicopter gunship. The South Africans are still bitter about this because the CIA threatened them not to sell the helicopters to other countries. They stole the idea, modified the design and launched the Apache.

The US government in my opinion is Satan incarnate ,they are dangerous and should not  be tangled with. They after one thing and one thing only :  Total World Domination. The have already mapped out their plan to distabilize the world so that thye step in under the guise of the New World Order (NWO) ,that is why they have been making so much noise about 2012.Pay attention and see what is going on around the world ,don't be fooled by CNN propaganda. You think the uprising in the middle east is just a coincidence? Think again! Do not make the mistake of thinking they are your friends or that they want to help.Pray tell in all the years that Americans have been dealing with Africa:

HOME MANY INVESTMENTS HAVE THEY MADE IN AFRICA THAT WAS AND IS STILL BENEFICIAL TO AFRICANS?

HOW MANY JOBS HAVE THEY CREATED IN AFRICA?

HOW MANY FACTORIES HAVE THEY BUILT IN AFRICA?

HOW MANY FREE TRADE ZONES HAVE THEY DEVELOPED IN AFRICA?

All the US government does is come in take our resources and tell us : asta la vista suckers

Look at the Chinese ,at least the Chinese are building factories and creating jobs. They are buying banks and investing billions of dollars in our economies.USA on the other hand wants to build military bases on African soil. Please tell how me military bases can create jobs for Nigerians or give them food?

If you love the USA so much ,ask your bros to divide thy nation. You NDs can have sex with the US government as much as you like.Odua does not flipping need them.We have everything ,brains ,agriculture, good governance e.t.c in ODUA .I don't see how broke a.z.z USA fits in to the program.

Beaf stop having this "i need to kiss the west's a.z.z before i can make it" mentality. It is what is leading many Nigerians the wrong way.Have self confidence in your continent and in your people. The Brazilians believed in themselves and built a solid nation, that is why their country is great today and that is why odumbo went there to beg them to buy crappy overpriced US products.

In case you don't know the African union has set up the African bank and the the African Monetary Fund which will help African countries in need.We no longer need the IMF.So screw Obama ,screw the US Government, screw the biased united nations ,screw the demonic IMF ,screw the rockafellers, screw the Rothschild's family, screw George soros ,screw the Illuminati ,screw the CIA ,screw the NSA and an screw every other moderfxker who wants to enslave the African continent and its people. They can take their war loving balls to Antarctica ,they must just stay away from Africa.
