ODUA_NEGRO: Thanks. Eze Aro has no political sovereinghty Over Ani-Igbo! Maybe Arochukwu or their affiliates. On the other hand Eze Nri still holds religious and traditional authority over most of Igboland. And the Eze Nri only leaves his throne for rituals purposes. He doesn't go to political gatherings. |

I believe its the Emir of Kano, the sultan of Sokoto and the Oba of Benin. Each have equal marks These Kings, have countlessly demonstrated interest in the plight of the masses and thier right to economic and social betterment. Other kings, just dey ...... how can you be influencial when we you have never come out to speak for your people's welfare. What has the obi of onitsha said about the kidnappings and killings in the east or the retrenchment of non indegines in neigbouring states. Shehu of Borno, only came out a few times to talk - but never outrightly condemned killings nor shed tears like his counterpart in kano. |

Tolexander: that is traditionally. But politically, Ooni supercedes alaafin.I don't really understand what you mean but traditional, Ooni still supersedes Alaafin. Negro has answered the question and Kats has flogged the issue several times on this forum. Even the 1st Alaafin became the 4th Ooni of Ife. Let's not derail the thread. |
Re: Nigeria Most Influential Monarch by Afam4eva(m): 3:22pm On Dec 15, 2012 |
No Traditional ruler is more powerful than the other because they're usually not subject to one another. You can't for example say the Ooni of Ife is more powerful than the Oba of Benin because they're only as powerful in Ife and Benin respectively. Though i think the traditional rulers in the North and to a lesser exten in the SW and Benin are seen as demi-gods by their people. But the same is not the case in Igboland. Despite the fact that the Obi of Onitsha and the Ahaba of Asaba are highly respected both in Igboland and outside, they won't dare cross their boundary. The respect we have for our Igwes and Obis are reciprocal and not absolute. 1 Like |

Re: Nigeria Most Influential Monarch by Nobody: 5:18pm On Dec 15, 2012 |
afam4eva: Their influence is only valid in their respective communities. You can't for instance compare the Obi of Onitsha to the ooni of Ife because of obvious reasons. The Yorubas respect their Obas very much but in Igboland, an Igwe is just like everyone else. The day an Igwe over steps his boundary he will be dealt with severely. THAT IS THE WAY IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN TILL DATE. |
