There have been heavy criticisms since news broke that President Muhammadu Buhari will visit his doctors in London.

Many say it is shameful for the President of a country with qualified doctors in hospitals where billions are budgeted yearly to travel abroad to check his health. Others say it amounts to hypocrisy for someone who promised to end medical tourism during his electioneering campaigns in 2015 to turn around to do the exact same thing he campaigned against.

In the President's defence, Femi Adesina say Buhari has used these doctors for over 40 years. The President himself said the same thing years ago, when he was interviewed by Christiane Amanpour of CNN.

In such wise, I agree that President Buhari should continue to use those doctors, as I see nothing wrong with him going back to them for checks.

Of course, I am for improved healthcare systems in Nigeria. I support a Nigeria where government funded hospitals and primary healthcare centres are in line with what is obtainable in Europe, Asia and America; and I support the training of doctors and/or specialists on the use of technologically advanced machineries for improved medical services. However, the issue of trust is important.

Why do you think that a pregnant woman goes back to the same hospital where she preciously gave birth? If a pregnant uses a hospital and she is comfortable with the services she received, she will go back there the next time she is pregnant, irrespective of anything. It will not matter to her if she has friends or family members who are medical doctors and can offer the same service in another hospital.

This is the same case with President Buhari. He has been with these set of doctors for a while and he is comfortable with them, so why change?

If we are to be truthful, everyone would want the best healthcare they could afford, irrespective of the destination.

If an ordinary citizen of Nigeria can fly abroad for medical treatment, why do we expect Buhari to not do the same simply because he is president?

Buhari can afford medicare in London and he has been with those doctors before he became the President of Nigeria. Those doctors know his medical history, they understand his body, and Buhari himself trusts them. Therefore, it is unfair to ask him to stop now.
