How To Get The Right Mattress Size For You by Y4all: 5:10pm On Sep 15, 2021
Having a comfortable night sleep starts with choosing the right mattress size for you. On average, we spend one-third of our lives on our mattresses. This is why it is the most important piece of furniture in a home. Importantly, the right slumber surface will help you decompress from the hectic day and wake up fully reenergized to face your day. choosing the right mattress size for you may not be as easy as it sounds. When purchasing a new mattress, it is important to know that the standard length of a mattress in Nigeria is 6ft. However, you can customize your mattress to suit your preferred size.

The following factors will help you choose the right mattress size.

Your size and sleep position

The size of the person sleeping on the mattress is a critical factor to consider when choosing a mattress size. For instance, tall people will need a mattress with extra length to give them adequate comfort. Similarly, if you are taller than 6 feet and a starfish sleeper, a standard 6ft by 6ft (King size mattress) may be too small for your body length. You would sleep comfortably on a 7ft by 6ft mattress if you are over 6 feet tall. Again, if you have a broader build and are 6 feet tall, you’ll want to get a 6ft by 4ft mattress if you sleep alone. Also, a tall person who is a fetus sleeper may still sleep comfortably on a 6ft by 6ft mattress.

If you will be using a bed frame or not

Ideally, you should measure the space you want to use your new mattress in before setting out to purchase a mattress. A bedframe determines the size of the mattress in terms of length, width and inches. You can estimate an additional 2 -5 inches for the extra bulk of the bedframe. So, a typical 5 feet by 6 feet, 8 inches mattress bed frame will be 5.2 ft. by 6.2 ft. by an 8.2 inches mattress. Also, ideally, a bed on a bed frame can be 10-18 inches high depending on your preference However, if you are not using a bedframe, you can choose a mattress size as high as 36 inches off the ground if you are tall.

Number of the mattress users

This is a very important factor when choosing a mattress size. If you will be sharing your mattress with a partner, a friend or a child, a 5 ft. by 6 ft. (Queen Size) mattress size will be ideal for you if you want to save cost. However, this mattress size can still feel too narrow for some couples, or sleep partners especially when they are wider build. So, people who share their mattress with children, more than one sleep partner and wants ample space can choose the 6ft. by 6ft. mattress or can customize the mattress to accommodate the number of users. The drawback of bigger mattress sizes is that it doesn’t fit well especially in not-too-big rooms and it is difficult to move. There are mattresses for couples that are affordable and highly durable.

Do you have bed accessories already?

Except you want to get new bed accessories such as bedsheets, mattress topper, mattress protector and so forth. If not, the size of your existing accessories should influence the size of your mattress. Specifically, if you already own a 6ft by 6 ft. mattress topper or bed sheet, it will be cost-effective to buy a new 6ft by 6 ft. mattress.

Your budget

Larger mattress sizes are usually more expensive than smaller ones. Therefore, you should consider the cost of the mattress size you are prospecting. Does it fit your budget, or do you have to reduce your preference to suit the money you have? For example, a 6 by 6 by 10 Winco foam orthopaedic mattress cost 143,000 whereas a 6 by 6 by 8 orthopaedic mattress cost 116,000, that’s a 27,000 difference in price. So, you can settle for either of them if it’s financially convenient for you. Again, the cost of bed accessories varies by size too. Meanwhile, the price of a mattress may not necessarily determine your choice in terms of size.

The size of your room

How big is your room? You don’t want to fit a round peg in a square hole, do you? So first, you have to be sure that your new mattress will fit through your doorway. Struggling to pass your new purchase through your doorway or staircase could damage the mattress and null the warranty or free sleep trial period on the mattress. Additionally, another question to consider is if your new mattress will allow space for free movement in your room. Preferably, you should have enough legroom, and if a large mattress makes your house cluttered, then buy a smaller one.

CONCLUSION

If you put these factors into consideration, then you are sure to invest in the right mattress size. If you still struggle with determining the right mattress size for you, you should speak with a mattress expert for recommendations. Better still, you can visit a mattress sales outlet or depot to get a visual feel of the mattress.
