How Mailafia died at Specialist hospital, Gwagwalada

...Alleges conspiracy as hospital demands N.6m to admit him, denies him oxygen

….How Doctor on duty frustrated foreign consultant to attend to him

….Laments his death a dark day for region, entire Nigeria

By Chris Ochayi

The Middle Belt Forum, MBF, Sunday, gave an account of how an activists and former Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Dr. Obadiah Mailafia lost battle to a yet to be disclosed ailment early hours of Sunday at the Specialist hospital, Gwagwalada, in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.

The Forum, in the statement issued by Dr. Isuwa Dogo, its National Publicity Secretary, which a copy was obtained by Vanguard in Abuja, alleged conspiracy, lackadaisical attitudes of medical personnel as responsible for the untimely death of the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, in the 2019 general elections.

The statement reads; ”The death of the former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital Gwagwalada, Abuja, this morning came to us as a great shock.

”As someone who relentlessly participated in the activities of the Middle Belt Forum (MBF), his untimely death has dealt a deadly blow on ethnic nationalities of not only the Middle Belt but the country at large.

”Arising from various enquiries from Nigerians over the circumstances of his death, the Forum wishes to state as follows: That Dr Mailafia arrived Abuja last Sunday September 12, 2021 from Akure and was received at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by his wife.

”On arrival at home, the wife noticed he was not in the best of health conditions and seemed to be suffering from malaria. After three days of treatment without signs of improvement, he went to the CBN Hospital on Friday September 17, 2021 where he was shabbily treated. It took the intervention of a senior medic who immediately placed him on oxygen and admitted him.

”The wife opposed the decision and insisted that she was opposed to the idea of taking her husband to Gwagwalada. Mailafia’s wife only succumbed when the consultant assured her that nothing bad will happen to her husband.

”Yesterday, Saturday September 18, 2021, Dr Obadiah was transferred to Gwagwalada. On arrival, the name of the doctor that was billed to attend to Dr Mailafia was not on duty. Even when an attempt was made by foreign health consultants to save the situation, the doctor on duty got angry and said he was not obligated to listen to any foreign consultants that had been brought into the matter with the sole purpose of ensuring nothing goes wrong.

”Wife of the former CBN Deputy Governor was asked to pay the sum of N600’000 as deposit even when it was a referral case, with accruing medical bill to be settled by the CBN. At a point, Dr Mailafia complained over his breathing problems and pleaded with the doctors to place him in a ventilator. The doctors flatly refused.

”Even after the doctors declared Dr. Mailafia dead, foreign consultants who were brought into the matter through Dr Mailafia’s son that is living abroad, had directed a family member who is a medical professional, with the wife of the CBN Deputy Governor, to mount pressure on the chest of Dr. Mailafia for resuscitation and thereafter place him on a life support.

”The doctors in Gwagwalada refused all entreaties by the family members of Dr Mailafia to follow the advice of the foreign consultants, insisting that they have already pronounced him dead.

”Even when the wife could feel the pulse of her husband, the doctor flatly declared there was nothing they could do since they had already pronounced him dead.

”While the above narration sums up the circumstances under which Dr Mailafia died, we still await the result of the actual cause of his death. As a nationalist and patriot that he was, Dr. Mailafia was completely dedicated to the emancipation of ethnic nationalities from the clutches of oppression.

”The economist was never afraid to speak truth to power just as he remained committed to the enthronement of justice and equity to all citizens across ethnic and religious divides.

”In the twilight of his life, this consummate technocrat and global scholar of repute beamed his searchlight on the raging insecurity ravaging our country. He expressed regrets over government’s incapacity to rein in the activities of insurgents and criminal groups terrorising the nation.

”As a former presidential candidate in the 2019 poll, Dr Mailafia sought to deploy politics to bring about the dream he had for his country. Even after he lost the election, he never let down the bar in demanding for a fair treatment for all Nigerians.

”The Forum recalls his patriotic zeal in standing up for truth and justice. He was never a letdown in being at the forefront of showing the way for national greatness as he was willing to lay down his life for Nigeria.

”The Forum is inspired by his altruistic disposition and contributions to national development. We remain proud of his footprints on the political, economic and social sands of our nation.

”In this period of grief, we extend our sympathy to his immediate family members and pray to the Almighty God to grant each and everyone of them the fortitude to bear the pain of this irreparable loss.

”The death of Dr Mailafia today represents a dark day for not only the Middle Belt but also for all citizens who yearn for a new dawn for justice in Nigeria.”

Appears to be Covid related. Sad.

Anyone taking a patient to a hospital in Nigeria in an emergency should be ready to take hell along with him or her. If not, these medics will just allow your loved one die for nothing.

The situation in Nigeria today has so badly affected our humanity that an average Nigerian can watch a fellow human being die and do nothing about it even when he/she can help.

You are hearing this because it is Mailafia. There are many who die daily in similar circumstances.

Doctor wen dey think of how him go take japa go canada, america or saudi, na im you dey depend to care for your person. Na dai you dey.

What a horrible reporting by Vanguard.

Looks like a blog post with so much incoherent and poorly arranged points with primary, secondary, tertiary and quarternary sources that ended up fouling up the whole story.

It is so bad that the reporter did not even know the name of the wife and son of the deceased yet kept on addressing them as "wife " and "son" and didn't even know that this is not likely malaria so he could get the view of experts on those symptoms similar to covid-19 symptoms.
Vanguard never reached any of the facilities accused to get their version and it ended up making the report unbalanced and not credible.

I pray that God will help our media rise above pettiness and mediocrity . This report is disgraceful. I don't even know if the profession has an agency that monitors the practitioners. I pity folks still buying a newspaper with such low quality reporting.

I don't think you need to be paid a billion dollars to do your job properly, Nigerian doctors
Go to Cuba, they have one of the poorest pay and infrastructure but some of the best doctors on earth. We need to stop making everything about money

The American medical doctor graduates with an average loan of $300k or N170m. And wouldn't earn that money for nearly 10 years after graduation

A Nigerian doctor graduates with less than an average of N5m expenses and has the opportunity to practice abroad with zero student loans

Of course the government needs to improve pay and infrastructure in Nigeria. Still, you chose a profession that is bound by oath to provide best of your ability services irrespective of money, status or curcumstance

Any statement that comes from middle belt forum, CAN, Ohanaeze, Afenifere, NEF and ACF must be skewed to make the government look bad.

They're not really pained by the death of Mailafia, just playing to the gallery. They know that their fellow wailers are already talking rubbish that the man was murdered.

Irresponsible journalism from vanguard.
As a former casualty officer,I've been in several situations where patient's relatives will want me to continue CPR forever even when the patient is clinically dead so I can already decipher what happened there.
When you hear from the management of the Hospital now,you will see it was exactly the opposite of what vanguard reported that happened.
The history of being treated for Malaria for 3 days without responding and needing oxygen at the CBN hospital already points to COVID 19 and his age might not help matters too but stupid vanguard will report the version that'll be sensational.

All men must die, may God grant his family the fortitude to bear the loss.
They should stop looking for conspiracies and foul play concerning his death and let him rest.
Mailafiya was a great man. He will be remembered by some as someone who spoke "truth" to power, even though non of his allegations are verifiable, his source of intelligence unreliable (market traders) and the only prrof of credibility in his allegations was him reading out his résumé (veteran banker, PhD holder from a foreign university, economist, etc).
Some of us will remember him as an agent of destabilisation who was bent on causing chaos in Nigeria. Maybe he was working for the Zionist, I can't say. But I have a strong feeling there were some forces behind his actions.
Rest in peace Dr Mailafiya.

Dr. Mailafia was eliminated by the genocidal Buhari regime. These wicked mass murderers have no conscience. They murdered thousands in the past, killing another person is nothing to them. God destroy them all! Ilahee Ameen!

Our heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family and the Southern Kaduna community!

The way and manner some let me not say most Nigerian medical workers behave in public hospitals is very bad.

There is no sense of urgency and you start wondering if they are doing you a favor.

This has all the trappings of Covid-19 hence the referral; it does appear he did not take the vaccine.

Ok it might be covid related and for the mere fact he needed oxygen explained that fact ,the doctors might just been careful ,this write-up seems to come from the mind of someone who want to discredit the professionals involved ,we really need to hear from the hospital before condemning them..but if what I read up there is the way it happened then I can say that this set of doctors should migrate to abroad instead of giving us poor service ,it is terrible thing to die in the hands of someone you believed should save your life, only Jesus Christ can save the world
