Abeg. Its late in the day for me to explain to you how democracy works and works for those who should make it work. But to confuse personal popularity to what is called a popular vote in a democratic process is unfortunate. And that is where we in Nigeria often miss it. We mix up personalities with processes. And that is why we Africans are always vulnerable to feudalism.

Popular voting simply means transferring the greatest amount of power and responsibility possible from citizen to whoever is elected. The larger the mandate the more responsible the leader HAS TO BE. But this only works well when there is an atmosphere of citizen demand for goo governance.

Democracy is not about personalities. It is not a beauty contest but more like the product of a job interview. You score high marks or the highest marks doesn't mean you own the company or will conduct your duties the way you like. What is means is that you are the best possible person to meet the aspirations of the firm. So quite naturally the better you perform at examination the greater the assignments you will be given.

Only in Nigeria do the citizens feel their responsibilities towards good governance start and end at the polls. After elections they hand over their lives to these public servants to do with it as they please. That is not democracy.
