Dethroned emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi ll on Tuesday said the constitution gives room for the impeachment of President Muhammadu Buhari for paying millions in fuel subsidies without appropriation.

“Every year, the government spends millions upon millions of dollars on fuel subsidies without appropriation. Under the constitution, this is enough ground to impeach the President.

“But nobody is holding them to account. The National Assembly is not holding them to account,” Mr Sanusi was quoted by Vanguard to have said at the Nigeria Economic Summit in Abuja on Tuesday.

The former CBN governor said the federal government’s populist approach was hurting the nation.

He implored the Buhari-led regime to be courageous enough to take the right decisions, saying the country was running a populist instead of a developmental state.

“Those in government must understand that there are times that you have to make some decisions not because they are popular but because they are right.

“We have to decide to run a developmental state and not a rental state; not a populists state,” the former emir said.

He further said that the Nigerian government was subsidising fuel, electricity at the expense of the growth of education in the country.

“We are pursuing a populist policy: we want to have cheap fuel, cheap electricity, a strong Naira. That is populism.

“At the end of the day, what price are we paying by taking money out of education in order to subsidise petroleum products?” he said.

I don't think the Nigeria legislative body will ever remove a sitting president. I don't even think this legislature even do check and balance.

Oga sanusi, I understand your perspective being a fervent advocate of the removal of this elite benefiting fraud tagged subsidy however removig subsidy in this present situation is like putting the final nail to this admin coffin, with inflation at its highest point and sapa being the new national anthem, removing subsidy might just be the breaking point.

Although there will never be a good time to do it but your questions should first go like, why are our refineries not working after spending so much; why are we budgeting yearly for this moribund facilities; all the turn around maintenace, why are they not yielding results"
If we resolve this on the government side, then we can discuss subsidy removal but as for me and my household, i take God beg una, no add high cost of fuel wahala join the present situation

We also have a scam as government. They keep telling us that subsidy is removed but at the end, we discover it was more of price increase.

APC led government is just not helping the economic situation of this country.

Buhari has over time committed enough infractions and outright violation of the constitution to warrant a long-overdue impeachment, but with the rubber stamp national assembly, impeaching the dullard will be considered a sacrilege.
