DOTian: 1966 coup, Ironsi thought they would be in power forever, changed the laws giving absolute power to himself and the resources to the centre. North staged a counter-coup and kept Ironsi's laws. Ojukwu threatened to secede (ironsi has also removed the right to peaceful referendum), so Gowon created states to remove Oil from his influence, weakening the political and financial power of the Oil producing Eastern region. That in a nutshell is how the North came to control everyone else and their resources. Prior to that, Nigeria's Oil was control by the regions under which the Oil was extracted. 2 Likes |

DOTian:It’s not the fault of the northerners. It’s the mistake of the unwise leaders of the now Southsouth region who ‘sold’ the oil wealth in their region when they journeyed to Kaduna in 1967 and begged the then governor of northern region, Usman Katsina, to beg the then HoS, Yakubu Gowon, to carve out from Biafra the areas of the non Igbo speaking groups in former Eastern region. Gowon heard them and quickly created Cross River and Rivers states out of Biafra. That helped a lot to scuttle Biafra from separation from Nigeria. Shortly after, northern politicians and soldiers seized the oil wells worth billions of dollars in the Southsouth states. Control of Nigeria and oil went to the hands of northern Nigerians. The oil producing areas got polluted by oil exploration because the northern leaders live far away from the oil producing areas. The rest is history. 2 Likes |
