How To Write An Exam If You Want To Pass! This Works For Every Nigerian Student. by shaw239: 3:13pm On Nov 04, 2021
As an experienced Tutor, Examiner and a Script-marker, for the purpose of teaching Young students and for You to understand, I use basic English in my teachings. No big Grammer or Vocabulary.

Preparations like attending lectures, studying and engaging in tutorial lessons prior to examinations are important, however, you may still fail your exams if you did not approach the examination with caution.
These are the steps to follow in order to fulfill your exam goals.

1) Exam tools:
Yes, you read it correctly. If your exams will start tomorrow, kindly visit your college and find out the requirements needed in the exam halls prior to examinations. Ensure that you registered the course in your course registration form. You might want to bring along your student's ID card, your school fees receipts etc. Kindly ensure that you knew the Course to write the next day(via your time table), get your tools ready. If Mathematical in nature, your calculator should be ready, you might need a pencil, two or three biro(pen), a rule, compass, maset, graph, log book etc. Please, always enter the exam hall with at least two pen️ (in order not to get disappointed by one).

2) Early Attendance:
This is very crucial. You can easily be disoriented by the shouting or harsh tones from your lecturers if you're late. Go to your center early, Get a good position, sit properly and Ensure that your writing tools are complete. When you enter your hall early, you will have the opportunity of getting every detailed verbal instructions not written on the paper. Some lecturers whose courses are scheduled might visit exam centers to make certain questions clear, some might even cancel a very difficult question if it's pointed out by a very brilliant student, therefore, one of the contributing factors to passing your exams is early attendance to the exam center.

3) Registration Nos:
Hmmm... failure to write Your registration no will result to an automatic carry-over (failure) or missing script. My dear students, the first papers given to you in the exam hall is your answer sheet(script). Once given, The first thing to do is: write your registration no( matric no, edu no, LT code etc) on all the pages of your answer scripts, this is mandatory. Due to the population and rush during submission of exam scripts, arrangements and sorting of courses, Your answer script might mistakenly get torn completely or half way, before it gets marked, one of your scripts might get detached from the rest. If this happens, your scripts can be seen if you had written your Reg.No. Many students do have issues of missing papers etc because, their answer scripts weren't seen. Even when graded, will loose their marks because, the lecturer couldn't find the reg no to grade it in. A lot of you face that problem, I hope you won't make such mistakes again.

4) Read the Instructions
Read the Instructions carefully. There was an aptitude test( First Post UTME) examination organized by a certain university 15 years ago, the instructions stated: write only in Capital letters, many students failed the test because they wrote in mixed letters. The exam was actually a test on the ability of students to follow instructions. It's very important to read the instructions of the examiner. Mark asterisk ✳️ if instructed, choose 3 questions only or answer all, this depends on the instructions given. Some professors may test your psychology. 10 question may be asked and out of those 10 only 4 were in the topics you were taught in class. The Examiner, may instruct the students to attempt no 1 and choose other two. It means that you must not answer the difficult and strange question unless you want to fail. Kindly read the instructions carefully.

5) Read the Questions thoroughly:
When you first looked at a question, you might get a bit confused. Go through the questions the second time. Read all the questions, sometimes, the answer to no 3 questions may be in no 4, vice versa. Moreso, your brain will process the questions and the storage room within your brain will release the answers. Do not be in a hurry to answer questions. I will also advice that you write down answers at the back of your answer scripts(Backpage) using pencil in order not to forget...Yeaa, especially when you memorised (crammed grin) it. Are you laughing cheesy, but that's true.

6) Approach
:
Approach each questions carefully and go straight to the point. If possible, and where stated, use a well labelled diagram with Appropriate title to illustrate your points, give examples if you can. When answering questions, numbering is important. You musn't answer questions according to numbers e.g you might answer questions no 3 before you answer questions no 1. Yes, that's ok, however, you must indicate the numbers (weird?? shocked, Yeah, that's why it's called a higher institution). Examiners, will mark using the marking scheme and all they look out for are the numbering. Be smart in answering questions. Answer those questions you know so well, yes, answer them first. You want to make an impression. An Exam marker may be lenient with your *not so correct answers* if they felt impressed by your earlier answers. How about that .

7) Attempting Questions
This is where you need to be smart. If your Examiner wants you to answer 3 questions only out of 5 questions, kindly answer only 3 questions please!!. However, if you are very sure of the answers to only 2 questions while you're not too sure of the others , go ahead answer them(the 2 easy ones). However, to boost your mark, if you know a little of the other questions, instead of attempting only one, kindly attempt the two. Sometimes, if markers are impressed with your answers to the first two, they may still mark the attempted 2 but choose the best amongst the two of them to complete the answers to a total of 3.(Most times brilliant people get lucky)

cool Handwriting and neatness
Your handwriting must be neat, spaced and well written and clearly stated. Some fail exams because of their handwriting. You should also avoid cancellations, however, if you can't, place a single line on the sentence or word which you want to erase. A clean answer sheet attracts a mark of its own. You might have answered wrong but the marker may decide to award you +1 due to your neat hand writing. The truth is, if you want to pass your exams, learn how to write properly.

9) Avoid Short hand:
Hmmm, some students make this grave mistake. Writing exams using Short hand will lead to not only disqualifying the answer but also give you a negative marking. Some do write international as interntl, understanding as undstandn, because as cos, your as ur, etc. That's automatic failure with negative. Some angry exam makers may award you -1 for such indiscipline in writing especially in your examinations.

10) Extra answer Sheet(script)
This is necessary if you have more to write. Some examiners may ask you to Describe an Enzyme, define an enzyme or what is an enzyme. These 3 questions are not same. One of the questions require only a sentence while another question requires you to give every detail of an enzyme and as such give an extensive explanation and diagrams or illustration needed hence you might need extra papers. Do not shy away from it if you wish, however, requesting for extra sheet does not guarantee success because Some students write off points.

11) Read through your answers
It's important to read through your answers to be sure that you wrote the spellings correctly before you submit. Once you're certain of your answers, go to your back page and draw a line across the salient points you wrote down earlier with pencil.

12) Do not be in a rush to Submit your answer script.
Yes, if it's a 3 hour exam, there's a reason for that. Do not be in a hurry to submit because your colleagues are submitting. If you noticed, the most brilliant in your class aren't always the first to submit their papers. Some even submitted after every other person. However, do not submit when there's a last minute rush. Ensure that your answer scripts are firmly attached to one another as well as Reg no written on all the scripts.
So, if you prepared before Your exams and follow the steps above, you will pass... infact, you may get an A.
