Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun
Governor Ibikunle Amosun, his Deputy,Prince Segun Adesegun and 26 new lawmakers luckily escaped mass death and injuries today at the Ogun state House of Assembly [OGHA]when an explosive device planted under a ring inside the chamber was detected and evacuated while it was yet to explode.

The explosive material which the Police authority told The Nation is an "Improvise Explosive Device[IED]" was planted few meters away from where Amosun, his Deputy and key officials of OGHA were billed to seat.

The device, The Nation learnt, was locally made. Anti - Bomb Disposal unit of the Ogun state Police Command detected it around 10:am and safely removed it before the arrival of the Governor and his Deputy.

The Governor was expected at the OGHA to witness as well as inaugurate the first sitting of the seventh legislative Assembly of Ogun state House of Assembly. There was unease and apprehension at the Assembly premises.

However, when the new legislative Assembly commenced sitting around 10:03am,Hon. Suraj Adekunbi from Yewa emerged the Speaker of the OGHA while Hon. Tola Banjo, representing Ijebu - Ode state constituency was elected Deputy Speaker.

Banjo nominated by Hon. Remmy Hazzan [Odogbolu] defeated Hon. Motunrayo Oladapo - Adeleye [Ifo 11] his co - contestant to the office of Deputy Speaker.

Adekunbi was nominated for the office of a Speaker by Hon. Odofin Shonuga[Ikenne]and Hon. Olakunle Oluomo [Ifo].

With no counter nomination, 23 of the 26 lawmakers voted in support of Adekunbi becoming the Speaker. And taking his oath of office by 11:03am, he pledged to work harmoniously with the executive to ensure peace and development of Ogun state.

Reacting, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, said the discovery of an explosive substance suspected to be a bomb within the OGHA just as he was about to inaugurate the seventh session of the Assembly, is "condemnable" and act of "wickedness."

The Governor added that it depicts the desperation of some people who are accustomed to levying violence on others. He charged the security agencies to fish out the perpetrators and bring them to book.
