The Federal Government has launched a portal for its 5,000 housing units which are under different phases of completion.

The Minister of Works and Housing Babatunde Fashiola, said Nigerians can now apply for houses built under the current Federal Government’s National Housing Programme (NHP) in 34 states of the country.

This was following the formal launch of the portal, ‘https://nhp.worksandhousing.gov.ng,’ which took place at the Conference Room of the Ministry in Mabushi, Abuja on Friday.

Fashola said, “We converge here just to introduce a portal on which the National Housing Programme pilot will be offered for sale to the public. What that means is that we will not be selling printed forms, the forms are online and this allows for more openness, limits human intervention and any disposition to any underhand practice”.

Nigeria has a housing deficit of over 21 million units and over N21trn will be required to finance the deficit.

But the debate by experts is that the country needs housing units that average Nigerians can afford.

The National Minimum Wage signed by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 was N30,0000 per month.

The building project which was undertaken by the Ministry of Works is under the National Housing Programme programme and is inline with the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria (SGD), the government had claimed.

The seventeen SDGs have an urban component, including targets such as affordable housing.

Goal eleven of the SDG targets to ensure that by 2030, the government will provide access for all to adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic services and upgrade slums.

It's better than not having the opportunity to have one at all in the past.
Moreover are you abreast of the current price of building materials?

The unit is definitely not for a minimum wage earners as one will be required to put in some years in service to be qualify.

What we should be talking about here is how the FG will help the civil servants to get or afford owning this housing from the meagre salary they collect possibly through mortgage

That's what they're doing.
Beneficiaries as civil servants will access this property through Federal Mortgage Bank, as payment will be deducted over time from your salary.
Assuming you're earning 80k/month and 25% is being deducted from your salary every month. In the next 10-12years you should be able to upset it, with the consideration that you will gain promotion with salary upward review.

FG knows the houses are strictly meant for top civil servants and not minimum wage earners.

Dem just dey whine average Nigerians to think we are also included in their plans. The present administration don't care about the masses one bit.

You are wasting your time with ignoramuses! Mortgage is used to make affording houses easier. I am actually surprised they could build a house that will cost 7M. Most mortgage are designed to be paid over your working life. Even the US most of this folks worships sells houses to people they mind end up paying for over their lifetime. University education is the same, they end up paying for school throughout their work life.

The challenge is the size of the apartment. But it is a good start. Civil servants salaries are deducted monthly to FMB.

One bedroom flat will occupy one third plot 1/3 of (100 by 50ft) being (33 by 50ft)

1/3 of a plot will park 2 cars.
