The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, University of Lagos chapter, Dr Dele Ashiru, has revealed that Nigerian professors do not earn more than N416,000 as monthly salary.

Ashiru disclosed this during an interview on the Sunrise Daily programmed on Channels Television, stating that university lecturers deserved better welfare packages.

He said, “No Nigerian professor earns more than N416,000 in a month as the total package. We are saying let us renegotiate this agreement so that people’s conditions of service will improve.

“As I speak to you, our members have been earning the same salary since 2009 till date. I don’t think there is any section of the Nigerian economy and society that has been so treated.

“The highest-paid professor which means that if he remains in the university system for the next 10-15 years will not earn more than the same amount he’s been earning since 2009.”

On Monday, ASUU issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to implement the agreement they had reached in 2020 following their strike action that lasted for nine months.

The Federal Government and ASUU had reached an agreement to improve the welfare and remuneration of university lecturers, settle unpaid allowances, and provide a fund to revitalise Nigeria’s universities.

Ashiru, however, noted that the Federal Government had not signed the Memorandum of Agreement since May, despite a renegotiation.

Which is very very poor. But like the police, no amount as salary can curb blocking and other related offences perpetrated by SOME of them.

The minds that should be retained in the academics observing the situation, prefer anywhere else than the position.

The higher institution of learning and the Civil Service are the foundations upon which a progressive society is built.

If we had competent and motivated people in the Civil Service, the Nation would by far, be better off.

The best brains are trooping out of Nigeria to countries that appreciate and could utilize them.

A graduate student has the opportunity to student assistantship, of scholarship- abroad. They help develop members of the society there. In public universities in Nigeria, it is peanuts that is paid, the young and older academic are depressed in their inability to afford a fair and decent lifestyle and regretting in their decision to choose humanity by teaching.

Were not ASUU, in most Nigeria academic institution, wave of nepotism creeping in, imposing incompetent and agreeable lots in the employ of the university would have rotted Nigeria public universities and selling certificates and degrees for undeserving but otherwise financially capable individuals would become the ladder out of the ruin experienced by those in the academics.

Bubu and your other rulers don’t care, they can afford any universities abroad for members of their family.

The government must fix the Civil Service and make it attractive to our best minds. The Civil Service can build the Nation. The government must make teaching positions competitive by increasing the motivations of such positions. The products of our academic institution, if properly equipped, can fix our societal issues.

Only competent and willing academicians can help do this.

He should go to the NASS and tell them. They're the ones that make N30M monthly compared to the masses that make N30K.

The government should improve their package but also stop them from teaching in more than one institution.

The Nigeria government of today do not value education. Their priority is creating grazing routes, paying hungry people to organise anti government protest and waging war against social media.

The majority even earn less, reason why most of them are wicked, you will see a professor's boot and you will be wondering why their life is like that, most of them don't even have good cars, I have always wanted to get my Ph.D. but anytime I see our so-called professors they never look good, I have decided to make more money then go for my PhD

Nigeria will never be better because the majority of Nigerians are selfish and only in it for themselves. The Nigerian dream is to be able to oppress and stunt on your neighbors, people in your hometown, friends, fellow parishioners, old classmates in your WhatsApp group.

We say the politicians are corrupt. But the immigration people who Jack up the prices of passports or make you wait 6 months are not politicians . The people who were letting VIPs cut the queue to get their vaccines are not politicians. We that happily take advantage of this are not politicians.

When your goal is to oppress your neighbor, it doesn’t matter if you don’t have light when you have a gen. Maybe even a big diesel powered one. It doesn’t matter if you have bad roads when you have an SUV and he’s in his Camry. It doesn’t matter that they haven’t paid you salary since you managed to get some nice trads for thanksgiving in Church this month on credit from your tailor. Lagos is a fucking joke, people will be doing red carpet for events where they have to step over an open gutter full of a fetching reeking dark green miasma. Paying $5m for a penthouse apartment so you can see people shit in the lagoon. Building estates with bizarre, untrue names Harcourt Gardens with 1 strip of grass as greenery, while the next door community live in a slum. Even when they manage to come home without getting jammed, shot, stabbed, robbed or kidnapped, or maybe crushed by a trailer. They are not angry that these things happened but instead thank God. Their God being better than the one the poor dead or abducted bastard worshipped. Plot twist they went to the same church.

Not enough people find this bad, and those that do realise this and have left. Anyway sha, Nigeria is like a cockroach, it’ll keep living, even without a head
