As the announcement by the Federal Government that it will give N5,000 each to 40 million “deserving” Nigerians beginning from July next year when it plans to end fuel subsidies continues to generate reactions, analysts at CSL Research have expressed doubts over government’s ability to remove subsidies on the proposed date.

In a report obtained by New Telegraph yesterday, the analysts said their scepticism was based on 2022 being a pre-election year, stating that “government may be forced to retain the subsidy to avoid any clash with the populace.” The analysts also faulted government on its plan to cushion the impact of subsidy removal on the populace, contending that the monthly grant of N5,000 may not be adequate and that Nigeria’s lack of reliable data may make it difficult for government to effectively implement the plan.

As the analysts put it, “the deregulation of the downstream oil sector remains a politically sensitive discourse. Deregulating the downstream sector, which would at times of rising international price of crude oil involve raising the pump price of petrol, constitutes a challenge for a country where the subsidy on petrol prices is seen as the only source of social security.

“Thus, we opine that the July 2022 commencement date for the plan might not come to fruition. For one, 2022 is a pre-election year and the government may be forced to retain the subsidy to avoid any clash with the populace. Again in our view, the plan to provide monthly grant of N5,000 might not provide the needed cushion by the time the effect of the removal reflects on the overall consumer wallet.

Also, it appears almost impossible to effectively execute given Nigeria’s poor population data.” The analysts noted that while, with the emergence of COVID-19, it has become clear that government could no longer continue with the fuel subsidy regime especially, given that the Nigerian economy in the past decade has been grappling with constrained capacity to generate enough revenue “an attempt to revise the price to suit current realities will be strongly resisted by the populace who have been hard hit by two recessions and a pandemic in the last five years amidst rising food and utility costs.”

Meanwhile, Bloomberg reported the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, as saying that the N5,000 cash transfers to poor Nigerians will happen over a period of six to 12 months.

I think that either way , the government is going to do it

Fuel prices are rising and with it the cost of refining fuel and with it the cost of subsidy

Either goverment removes subsidy or takes another loan or salaries and wages don't get paid

This is a good step in the right direction but it comes with harsh reality. A government spending 250billion naira montly subsidizing fuel and also financing other sectors isn't a broke government but a government running the rat race in stagnation.

We need to all face this hard reality of subsidy removal now and let our children enjoy the reward. I know you would say, "The government is too corrupt to be trusted for any fruitful outcome of subsidy removal."

But

Can we just have a little faith in them for once?

Economy and politics compliments each other and so, even if we vote in a trusted young leader to lead Nigerian; won't he need money to execute his leadership?

5000 x 40m x 6 months = 1.2billion naira, is it not better to start up cottage industries in collaboration with China with such funds? With such more people will be employed and earn far more than the 5k peanut.

I think Nigeria should first help the masses in the area of high cost of living before bringing another hardship of high fuel price and transportation to them

If you are in Lagos, I am into production, packaging and distribution of popcorn and we have different distributors in different areas. If you want to partner with me and we share profit. Contact me

The best advice I’ll give anyone right now is; before you go to sleep, don’t believe anything concerning this government because when you wake up, they can implement a very weird decision.

I'm with you here. Working with Dangote to ensure that refinery comes on stream next year is still the best solution to all of this. Importation will reduce dramatically and cost of petrol from Dangote refinery will be in the region of N200- N250 per litre so still reasonable. Diesel, kerosene and jet fuel prices will also come down

A government that wants to remove subsidy and still FIX price

Then withdraw more than 2 trillion to pay their imaginations they have dubbed Nigeria

A government that export gas but lie that international market affected the price of Gas in Nigeria

Lol. Very funny set if individuals. So they expect or even believe that 5k will help cushion the effects of subsidy removal. This is very laughable.

If they go ahead and remove subsidy next year, the harsh condition Nigerians will find themselves in will be something they will never forget.

Subsidy havent been removed, yet, food prices are sparing like a bird flying in the sky, what do they think will happen when subsidy is removed.

The APC can do anything they wish, whenever they wish. The pre-election year analysis only makes sense in a credible democratic process. The APC know the votes of the people do not count so they can do as they wish and still manipulate the votes to favour them.
Nigerians are in for a rough ride...
