No lion will dare hunt an adult hippo, except maybe in a group of other lions, and at night (when the hippo's eyesight is extremely poor).

Lions (except they are extremely hungry, or are in a hunting group) always go for something that they can kill easily. Only a foolish lion (such as a young inexperienced lion) or an extremely hungry one willing to gamble away its life will sneak up on an adult hippo.

The only other time when lions may hunt hippos is at night because hippos have very poor eyesights at night, and are very vulnerable on land. So, even at night, if a hippo is surprised by a lion attack, it would try to find a river. If it manages to get into a river, and there is still a lion on its back, that lion is a goner.
