The 1999 Stance On Presidential Declaration Of Successor by VGSocial: 4:36pm On Jan 12, 2022 |
Amidst the preparation of the 2023 presidential election, the president, Muhammad Buhari has made his intention known on having a successor. His intention of picking a successor, now an open secret, was met with mixed reactions from the citizens. Can the president pick a successor according to the Nigerian constitution? Section 146(2) of the constitution states that a successor can be picked if the incumbent president becomes incapacitated, dies, resigns, or is removed from office (by impeachment). The line of succession is as follows: - Vice President of Nigeria - President of Senate - Speaker House of Representatives - Chief Justice of Nigeria - Deputy Senate President - Deputy Speaker House of representatives In conclusion, the president is also a citizen of the country, and can indicate a successor but to be non-partisan, it's best not to name a successor.
