I just Came across some old mechanics arguing about How the Peugeot 504 is stronger than the Mercedez 230E on the highway  Kinda funny...they were in their early sixties. From there I knew they have worked on this cars back Then... So car gurus Abeg I know it's funny  But abeg who go dust who? 1 Share

Never drove any of the two cars, only watched my old men (father and uncle) drive from the back seat. I know the Peugeots then, 504 and the 505 evolution were speed demons. Boys also talked a lot about the w124 V-boot but I didn't hear much about the w123 only enjoyed it's luxuries, leather interior, unique door handles and the step patterned tail lights. Life was sweet then abeg. Anyways I'll give it to the 504. On Google though, the Mercedes takes it.  Modified: Oh, I've actually driven the w123 but that was in recent years and not at high speeds. It felt quite heavy and not so fast though. |

Mercedes Benz runs faster than the 504. The benz is 2.0 to 2.3 Ltr engine while the 504 is 1.8. 1 Like 1 Share |

I have driven both. The Benz will outrun the 504 both in terms of handling and top speed. But in terms of ruggedness, power and ground-clearance, the 504 wins. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Drove the two. Benz faster and far better and more reliable. More comfortable. Then that exhaust note after a long journey na Benz get am. And if you come get that one wey dey humm..... Wooh Benz all day way. Don't risk your life in a 504! |

Any car in good condition can reach it's top speed. The question is, will it have balance/stability at top speed? How quickly will the brakes respond in an emergency? Given it's suspension, the 504's balance at top speed will be horrible. The Benz on the other hand will urge you to push it harder. My parents owned both, i never got to drive the 504, but i drove that W123, and it was fast! |

Siberia01:I'm sure you must've been thrilled listening to their conversation, and I'm not surprised that the men were in their 60's. These were the perfomance cars on Nigerian roads back in the day. There were those who believed that the 504 could be driven to the moon and back home in a day. I was also excited about these cars then moreso my curiosity wasn't satisfied until I checked out their performance figures in "autocar", one of the popular car magazines then. Well to the nitty gritty of the discussion, the Mercedes Benz was a better performance car. It had a 4 cylinder engine with a larger capacity of 2.3L, producing about 130hp when compared with the 504 engine who's capacity ranged from 1.7 to 2.0L, thus a power output of 93 to 100hp at the max. This translated into speeds of about 100mph for the Peugeot and 112mph for the Mercedes Benz. .. a nice trip down memory lane, to the wonder years.  |

Siberia01: Loses speed from 140kph. Really struggles at 160kph screaming all the way. Loved it. Eh I forgot 504 Paris did not let the Benz go and it was definitely quieter |

Praxtech: Benz threw people under trailers in Lagos on Friday and Saturday nights. 504 knocked down people tire. |

Well…my father owned the American spec 505 and his official vehicle was a 504(Best line). I was opportune to drive both…my uncle also owned the Mercedes and I also had the privilege of driving it. My judgement is that the Mercedes was faster, with a better handling…and a fantastic power steering.(Then)…but, the Peugeot was more reliable for a very long trip. |
