Police alert on home-made bombs in Rivers
• Monday, Jul 30, 2007
The Rivers State Police Command has alerted the public on the invention of high explosive home-made bombs being used by militants and hoodlums to terrorise their targets and the state.

This followed the recovery of seven live home-made bombs, an improvised explosive device made from empty cans of drinks, during an attack by militants at a Shell oil rig II in Soku in Akuku – Toru Local Government Area of the state.

During the attack, five expatriate workers at the rig were taken hostage, one mobile policeman was killed and several shells of expended 7.62 mm AK 47 rifle ammunitions were also recovered at the scene of the incident.

Briefing newsmen at the police Headquarters, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, the Head of the Police Anti-Bomb Squad, Henry Idiodi said examination of the home-made bombs recovered from the scene showed that high explosives were repackaged into empty cans of Power Horse and Red Bull energy drinks, which they use in damaging any strong object during operations.

Mr Idiodi who displayed the explosives further said the home-made hand bombs did not undergo factory process as they illegallyobtained the explosives and assembled them in cans.

He explained that the centre body of the cans has an opening into which plain detonator duely encapsulated with safety fuse was firmly inserted into the high explosives.

Such explosive, he said, is dangerous and called on the public to be alert and report such activities to the police for timely intervention.
