Laptops can become slow for several reasons, if however you have ruled out virus which can be solved by installing and updating an anti-virus, you may want to check the OS you are using Vista is slow and probably too large for a 1G lappi, Windows 7 could be faster and if you are not opposed to XP its the best for that ram.
