CHAPTER THREE
JAMIL

My eyes fluttered open at the first ring of my Alarm signifying the dawn of a new day. I yawned and stood up from the bed. I brought out a blue suit with a matching black tie and laid them on the bed before entering my extra large bathroom to shower. Once i was done, i stepped out from the bathroom and got dressed. Been the C.E.O of a multinational company didn't mean i would go to work late. I headed downstairs all dressed and my briefcase in my hand. Bella was setting up the dinning table for breakfast. She let out a huge smile as soon as she saw me.

"Good morning Bro"

"Morning Bella. Hope you slept fine?" I dropped my briefcase on the table and sat down.

"Yes i did. How about you?" She pushed a plate of whatever she prepared towards me. I scrunched up my face when i saw what she made.

"I slept fine Bella and what's this you prepared?" I asked.

"Oh that's vegetable mixture. It gives more blood to the body" she grinned like she had done a wonderful job.

"Did i tell you i need blood?" I shot at her.

"Well that's what i saw on the list. I'm not the doctor, don't get angry at me" she shrugged.

"I'm leaving for work now" I stood up and grabbed my briefcase.

"What about breakfast?" She called out.

"I have lost my appetite" i replied leaving the house. I hissed angrily. I was going to start eating nonsense all in the name of watching my health.

I got to work early as usual even more than some of my Employees. I parked my car at the area reserved only for me. I let out a full breath before stepping down from the car.

"Good morning sir. Welcome sir" everyone greeted as i walked into the company. I replied them with a nod and got into the elevator. Javelin Builders was one of the best building companies in Nigeria. We supplied building materials ranging from sharp sand, chippings, cement, tiles and everything about building. I inherited the company from my father who inherited it from his father too. The building was best described as an edifice. It was a seven storey building with a canteen, clinic and an underground warehouse. I got off on the 7th and the last floor where my office was at and walked straight to my office. My office could pass as a living room because of how large it was. A big mohogany table sat at the center of the office. Brown window blinds matching with the brown paint on the wall. A standing air conditioner and a water dispenser at the left side of the office. Two chairs stood side by side across the table. I didn't really have much things in the office though. Immediately i settled in, my personal Assistant entered my office all smiles.

"Good morning sir" She greeted. I was not the type of boss that drank coffee every morning, no.

"Morning Steph. What are my schedules for today? I asked. I had never been too friendly with my Employees. I always loved getting straight to business.

"You have a meeting by 12 noon with XHub agency, another meeting with Mr Hamid by 2" she read out from the book she held.

"Is that all" i raised my brows.

"Yes sir" she replied.

"Thank God i don't have much for today, i really need to rest" I replied her with a wave of the hand. She left almost immediately. I turned on my laptop and while i waited for it to boot, i felt a heavy cough rack through my body. I took my handkerchief which was tucked in my suit pocket and was right on time to place it on my mouth before coughing into it. While i coughed, I felt an excruciating pain slice through my stomach straight to my throat. After a few minutes, the cough subsided and i removed my hand which had covered my mouth while i coughed. A glance at my handkerchief, i felt my stomach churn and my heart became heavy. I felt my hands tremble and my body shook. I knew it was the end for me, i knew i couldn't survive it when i saw the red substance that stained my handkerchief, i had coughed out blood. I immediately opened my briefcase and took out my drugs. There were about five different containers of drugs, I popped three of each in my mouth and swallowed. I heard voices outside the office and hurriedly packed the drugs away. I didn't want any of my staff finding out. My Uncle entered my office without knocking, i let out a sigh of relief.

"Good morning Uncle Gerald" i greeted.

"Morning Jamil. How are you doing?" He asked whilst scrutinizing my face.

"I'm fine Uncle" I sighed.

"Isabella told me that you skipped breakfast this morning" he asked.

"I didn't like what she prepared" i hissed.

"You are not supposed to skip a meal Son. You need to eat well and take your drugs effectively" he admonished.

"I just finished taking my drugs, i will eat later" I replied with a shrug.

"I brought you something to eat." He said placing a bag i hadn't notice him come in with on the table.

"Don't tell me you brought Bella's vegetable nonsense" i scrunched my face making an eeew expression.

"No. I brought white rice and vegetable sauce and don't make it seem like it's Isabella's fault. The doctor made the list" he eyed me.

"Yea right, there is still vegetable in what you brought" I rolled my eyes. He shifted the stainless food flask to me. I picked up a spoon and scooped a little rice in my mouth.

"Have you coughed out blood again?" He
asked.

"No" I replied while chewing on my food. I didn't want him to worry, the reason i hid the incidence from him.

"All right son" he stood up "You will be fine. Just take your drugs and make sure you don't skip a meal" he added. I nodded and continued eating.

"And make sure you finish the food" he said before walking towards the door.

"Thank you" I said.

"You are welcome" he nodded before leaving.

CHAPTER FOUR
NONYE
I looked at my self in the mirror one last time before picking up my phone. Incase you are wondering where I was going to that I was looking at my self in the mirror, I wasn't going anywhere. I was only going to my mother's shade to help her out with evening sales. Since I was unemployed, it was only wise that i helped her out.

"Chimdiya, I'm going to Mama's shade" I told my sister who had her head buried in her book. She was studying for her forthcoming JAMB examination and Mama said no one should disturb her. I didn't really know where Mama intended to bring money for her Education from but she had been optimistic. If only i could get a job. I let out a full sigh.

"Okay sister. Bye bye" she replied me without raising her head up.

"Mtcheeeew" I hissed "Are you the first person to write JAMB in this country? Ordinary to talk to me, you didn't even look up. What if you are now studying for Cambridge Exam" I eyed her. She let out a laugh and shook her head.

"Sister bye bye, greet Mama for me" she replied, this time around glancing at me.

"Ndi JAMB" I hissed before going out. I was actually three years older than my sister but the idiot was taller than me. Sometimes i regretted being down to Earth. I refuse to use the word short. No matter what you say, I was not short, I was only down to Earth. I wouldn't really call myself beautiful but I wasn't ugly either. My body shape was like small letter d. Big ass and small breast. My sister once told me not to ever make the mistake of taking Penicillin because the medicine would mistake my breast for a boil and dry it. I chased her round the compound that day with Mama's broom. When i got to Mama's shade, she was attending to a customer. I took over from her while she went to peel more yam to be fried. As soon as the customer left, I sat down and took my phone. I opened my Email, checking if the companies that said they would get back to me sent anything, my face fell when i saw nothing.

"Nonye leave that phone and attend to a customer" Mama's voice startled me. I dropped my phone on the bench and stood up to attend to the customer. My eyes fell on a slim, tall, black handsome man. Slim, tall guys had always been my weakness. His face was smooth and cute with a handful of well trimmed beards. Then his lips, it was well carved, well structured and was Pink in colour. My eyes trailed his lips upto his nose and i gulped. Everything about this man screamed perfection.

"Good evening" He spoke. My heart flipped when i heard his baritone voice.

"Good eve... Good evening" I stammered. I nearly slapped my face for behaving like a jelly fish in the presence of this Handsome man.

"I want to buy this" he pointed at the transparent bucket Mama had poured the fried yams in, I nodded my head picking up a small white nylon "And this too" he added pointing at the second bucket that contained Akara.

"How much" I asked. He scratched his head in confusion and let out a sigh "How do you even sell it?" He asked. I scrutinized him again from his head to toe. His well tailored suit and designer shoes gave me the answer i was looking for. He was a rich guy that i could bet with the last Five thousand Naira i had in my account that he had never bought something like that before.

"You have not bought this before, have you?" I chuckled.

He shook his head showing the sign of negativity before letting out a smile too. "Nonye you are not done yet with the customer?" Mama asked from behind.

"I'm coming" I replied her before turning to stare at Mr Handsome. "Yam is Fifty Naira for three pieces while Akara is Fifty Naira for one piece" I replied picking up the fork from the stainless sieve beside the bucket.

"Give me everything" he blurted. I stared at him like he had ran mad. "What?" I asked.

"I said give me everything" he cleared his throat "That should be how much?" He added staring right into my eyes. I looked away and turned to talk to Mama.

"Mama" I called. She had already finished peeling the yam. She was cutting it according to the size she sells with. "Ogini?" She asked without sparing me a glance.

"Ochoro izu ha nine (He wants to buy all)" I said. Her head shot up instantly upon hearing that.

"Eziokwu? (Truly?)" She asked grinning from ear to ear.

"How much is everything?" I asked her.

"Yam is a total of five thousand five hundred Naira while Akara is Two Thousand Naira" she replied. I turned back to Mr Handsome, opened my mouth to speak but he beat me to it.

"Seven thousand five hundred Naira. Put everything" he nodded. I dropped the small nylon i had picked up earlier and took a bigger one. I packed it up and gave it to him. He brought out some Naira notes from his pocket and gave it to me without counting. I counted it and discovered it was fifteen thousand Naira. I counted seven thousand five hundred Naira out of the money and returned the rest to him.

"Keep it" he said shaking his head. I turned to stare at Mama who now had her attention focused on us. She shook her head at me meaning i shouldn't take the money but the Monica in me didn't listen to her.

"Thank you sir" i smiled at him folding the money. He nodded before he left.

"Ogini mere inaghi anu ihe? (Why are you stubborn?)" Mama thundered from where she was. I only shrugged and went to put the money in the bag hanged on the nail just close to where Mama sat.

"I told you not to take the money" she spoke again.

"Mama calm down na. The young man had money to spare, I only helped him to keep the money safe" I replied.

"Is the money your own? What if he is a ritualist?" She asked. I facepalmed. Mama always said that. Whenever she didn't want us to take money from people, she brought ritualism up.

"He is not a ritualist" I chuckled.

"Chiwanu ochi (Laugh na)" she hissed.

CHAPTER FIVE
JAMIL

I had closed early from work that particular day. I didn't have many meetings and appointments. Just a few documents i signed and the board meeting i had earlier in the day. I left the office and instructed Stephanie to go home too once it was closing time. I didn't have it in mind to go home yet, so i drove to the same place i had been going to for some days then. I didn't know how or why i felt nothing but peace and tranquility anytime I was at this particular place. When i got to my destination, my attraction wasn't there yet. I sighed and checked the time, maybe i came too early. I turned off the ignition and decided to wait. The first time i saw her was when i had bought foodstuffs and was going to deliver them to my gateman's wife and children. Ever since i had that conversation with the doctor, i had decided to spend money on the less privileged and the needy. I had seen her drop at the junction. Her physique and complexion were what attracted me to her. I was a sucker for petite girls. I loved it when my girl was someone i could carry without any hassle plus she was also yellow in complexion. Aside petiteness, fair skin girls were my weakness. They weakened me and broke my resolve. I had never been with a girl that had both qualities and seeing her that evening, my heart flustered. I followed her quietly. She stopped at a shade where a woman was selling fried yam and Akara. I parked a few meters away from the shade and from the resemblance, i deduced that the woman was her mother. I watched her for a while. She bursted into tears at a point and i almost flew out of my car to console her. I watched her mother shift close and Pat her back. Within a twinkle of an eye, the woman slapped her and she caressed her cheek. I felt my heart tighten and wondered why she was slapped. She stood up after a few minutes and left the shade. I started the car and followed her at a slow pace. She crossed to the other side of the street and entered a small compound, I drove off afterwards to my destination.
My phone beeped signifying an incoming call. I answered on the second ring and my uncle's voice rang out from the other end of the phone.

"Jamil, where are you? Your personal Assistant said you left the office earlier" he asked.

"I went out for some fresh air Uncle Gerald" I replied.

"Where exactly are you?" He asked again.

"Ubakala" i sighed.

"Uba what?" He half screamed. "What are you doing there young man?" He growled.

"I'm fine, i will be back before you know it" i rolled my eyes. Although i knew why he was apprehensive. Ubakala was like a Hundred miles away from where i lived. It was off Umuahia town and it took approximately 3 hours from my place to Ubakala.

"Make sure you come back on time and don't eat anything. Bella is preparing something for you" he said.

"Okay" i frowned. Thinking of what Bella must have cooked sent a bile taste to my throat. I must admit, i didn't like the new menu given to me but i couldn't even complain. I sighed and dropped my phone, wondering if she wouldn't be coming to her mother's shade today. After a few hours, i saw her coming from afar. I kept my gaze on her and let my eyes roam around her body. The body con gown she wore clung to her body making her hips noticable. Even from the front, her big ass was very much noticable. Her skin shone under the evening sun. I looked at her face, she didn't have makeup on but she was still pretty. Then the way she walked like a Queen, gently and with an Aura of confidence. I followed her with my eyes until she entered her mother's shade. She took over from her mother and attended to a customer she met there.

I let out a full breath and decided to step out from the car. I made up my mind to talk to her. Walking towards the shade with all determination, I kept my gaze on her till i got there. She was focused on her phone and didn't notice my presence.

"Nonye leave that phone and attend to a
customer" I heard her mother tell her. "Nonye" i repeated in my head "what a beautiful name" i muttered. She raised her head up to look at me, I felt my heart skip. She had the most beautiful eyes i had ever seen. She came close to where i stood and stared at me too. I noticed her gaze drop to my lips and rise back again to my nose. I wondered if she was checking me out too.

"Good evening" i spoke first.

"Good eve... Good evening" she stammered.

"I want to buy this" i pointed at the transparent bucket that contained fried yam. She nodded her head and picked a small nylon. "And this too" i added, pointing at the other bucket that contained Akara.

"How much?" She asked. Okay i wasn't expecting that question. To be honest i had never bought something like that before. I scratched my head in confusion and let out a sigh "how do you even sell it?" I asked. She looked at me from head to toe and i wondered why.

"You have not bought something like this before, have you?" She chuckled. I shook my head at her in response also letting out a smile.

"Nonye you are not yet done with the customer?" Her mother spoke from behind. "I'm coming" she answered before turning to me "Yam is Fifty Naira for three pieces while Akara is Fifty Naira for one piece" she replied.

"Give me everything" i blurted. She looked at me like i had grown horns. Well i would look at myself like that too if i were her. "What?" She asked.

"I said give me everything" i repeated "That should be how much?" I added staring into her eyes. She looked away and spoke something in their local dialect to her mother. I saw the woman's face lit up and concluded that she must have heard that i wanted to buy everything.

"How much is everything?" She asked her mother. "Yam is a total of five thousand five hundred Naira while Akara is two thousand Naira" the woman replied her. She turned back to me and was about to talk when i beat her to it.

"Seven thousand five hundred Naira put everything" i nodded. She dropped the small nylon she had picked earlier and took a bigger one. She packed it up and gave it to me. I brought out some Naira notes from my pocket and gave them to her without counting. I knew it was more than the said amount but i just wanted them to have everything. I even regretted not having plenty cash on me. She counted the amount she needed and returned the rest to me.

"Keep it" i shook my head. She looked at her mother who now had her gaze fixed on us. She shook her head at her meaning she shouldn't collect the money. My face fell. I wanted them to have the money even though it was little. I had this urge to help them.

"Thank you sir" she smiled at me while wrapping the money together. I chuckled inwardly. Another trait I liked in girls "stubbornness". I know i sound weird right now but i loved stubborn girls. I liked when i tell a lady to do something and she proved stubborn. This lady just had everything i loved in a woman. I nodded at her before i left, making a mental note to come with plenty cash next time.

I got home around 8pm, my uncle would surely have my head. I remembered i had bought yam i couldn't eat and decided to give it to James my gateman. He was coming to meet me when i got off the car. I opened the back door and took the nylon that contained the yam.

"Welcome Oga" he greeted when he got close to me.

"Yea James, how are you?" I asked.

"I'm fine sir. I'm very fine" he replied cheerfully. Okay James was extremely happy that night and it was weird.

"What happened James? Out with it" i said.

"Sir my wife called. She told me what you did a week ago. Thank you sir" he said. Looking at me in admiration.

"Women" I muttered. I had told her not to tell James about my visit but you all know women. I was even glad she lasted about a week before spilling. "It's nothing James" i replied.

"Aaaah Oga, it's something ooo. Those food stuff you bought for them will last for months. Thank you sir" he said.

"It's fine James" i replied and was about handing the yam to him when i remembered something. "Your children, they are in school aren't they?" I asked him. Incase you are wondering how i knew James' house i will tell you. I was a very careful person. I had the address of everyone working for me. James' house was the only place i had visited personally though.

"Yes sir, they are in school" he answered.

"I need their names by tomorrow. The four of them. The company will place them on a full scholarship from Primary to University level. Any university of their choice" I nodded.

"Jesus" he shouted going on his knees "Oga thank you. Chukwu gozie gi. God bless you. You are the best boss anyone can ask for. Thank you" he showered praises on me. I shook my head hating the fact that it took me a trip to the hospital for me to put smile on people's face. I looked at James, he was still on his knees thanking me profusely and i decided to do more.

"How much do i pay you James?" I asked.

"Seventy thousand Naira sir" he replied.

"Your salary will be tripled by the end of the month" i smiled.

"Sir?" he asked as his eyes glistened. The security light mounted beside my garage shone on his face, giving me a clear view of his wet eyes. "Thank you sir" he bursted into tears, laid flat on the ground and held my legs. "God will continue to bless you sir. You shall live long sir. You will never die Young sir" I refrained myself from crying the moment he said that.

"James is okay, get up" i said trying to help him up but failed. On a normal circumstances i could have carried James up all by myself but then, how the mighty had fallen. He stood up and wiped his tears. "And yes, have this" i stretched the nylon to him.

"Another surprise sir? Thank you" he said taking the nylon. I was about to reply when i felt the urge to cough. I took my handkerchief from my suit pocket and covered my mouth. I coughed heavily into it and James stared at me, asking if everything was alright with his eyes. I nodded and continued coughing. I waved at him with my other hand and entered the house. Bella was seated in the living room waiting for me. She rushed towards me immediately she saw me. I fell heavily on the couch.

"Are you okay Jamil?" She asked. I stopped coughing and removed the handkerchief, i fearfully peered at it and my fears were confirmed.

"Blood" Bella screamed. I coughed out blood again. "Where are your drugs?" She asked.

"In my briefcase and it's in the car. I forgot to carry it" i whispered through laboured breathe. She left immediately and headed out to the garage.
