Lagos to begin issuance of electronic identity cards with unique identification numbers to all residents of the State [Will fraudsters attempt to get as many as possible to sell out-of-State?]
News Tuesday, June 28, 2011

BY Olasunkomi Akoni

LAGOS-Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has said that his administration will soon commence the issuance of electronic identity cards with unique identification numbers to all residents of the state. He said it was aimed at creating a reliable data base of all citizens in the state.

Babatunde Fashola, of Lagos, and Mr. Lawal Pedro, Permanent secretary Ministry of Justice, during the signing of the bill establishing the Lagos State Residents Registration Agencyin to Law at Lagos House Ikeja, Lagos. .Photo by Bunmi Azeez

Fashola, who spoke, after signing the bill establishing the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency, in his office, added that the identity cards would also be used by residents to access government services and help the state in planning for its citizens.

Apart from the bill, which makes registration compulsory for all residents in the state, the Governor also signed the Heritage Sites Bill into law. The heritage law seeks to preserve and protect historical sites in the state.

Fashola said: "The Lagos Residents Registration bill that has just been signed into law is dear to our state. It will serve as a critical planning tool for the government and help us respond to citizens’ needs more effectively.

"Also, the law will help us deal with the issue of security as residents will be issued an electronic card with unique identification which they will carry for life."

The governor said the registration was compulsory for all residents irrespective of their state of origins, adding that the government would strictly enforce compliance as soon as it becomes operational.

He said the pilot registration of civil servants had since commenced in the state and that the government decided to start with its workers to test-run the exercise.

He dismissed insinuations in certain quarters that the registration was meant for taxation purpose, saying that it was strictly to create a data base of all citizens for development purposes.

But why electronic? Electricity is not a reliable source of power. An identification card with a unique number would be fine. I love this idea, it would help lawmakers know their population.

Means the card would most likely have an embedded computer chip.

The E registration will be a very wonderful project but what happened to the national I'd project that was aborted by OBJ that would have been better.

If the project is skewed to edge igbos out of lagos like someone suggested then the following will likely follow up, the passing of a bill in the national assembly for the New commercial capital of Nigeria in kogi state or calabar , which will be followed up by another bill that will compel all the Oil companies headquaters and the federal parastatals like CBN , NNPC , NPA e.t.c to relocate their headquarters to the new commercial capital , then Lagos will finally be a yoruba city.

Okay, after loosing it for a bit, try and gather yourself together, re-read that gibberish and re-write another post. Try and make a coherent one this time.

Igbos need not sit and watch loafers whose only achievement seems to be that of claiming inheritance to a city that used to be the Nation's capital edge them out.

With the mentality displayed by some posters, Gwari people might wake up to start claiming Abuja and issuing visas to the people who investments and hadwork built abuja before they can come to abuja forgetting that Abuja

All over the world New cities are being built , an entirely new city was built in china (shenzhen) for heavy technology , americans built detroit (Motown) for their Automobile capital.
The SE and SS should use the opportunity or having GEJ in power to have a deep sea port completed in AkwaIbom , this would enable igbo business men relocate to the east with their busnesses and families drawing also their banks and other businesses like hotels , hospitals and telecom companies to follow suite.
In that way lagos can now be for the yorubas and one wonders what they can make out of it like they have made out of ibadan.

City that used to be the Nation's
capital edge them out.

The key word being "used to be".

You people need to get over that saying, go back home and start to develop your land. How many more ways do we have to tell you that you have outstayed your welcome?

We have nothing in common with you lot. Culturally, we are miles apart! grin

^^Lagos was developed by Federal Gov using federal tax fund and therefore belongs to all Nigerians. The fact that indigence have been given the priviledge to rule that teritory should not be taken for entitlement becos that could all change in the near future.

I really would like to see the Yorubas try any stunt with people of the other tribes in Nigeria and outside Nigeria born and living in lagos, becos den it will be clear, dat they are the minority in Lagos. Build another type of metropolis on the level and scale of lagos itf the Oduduwa are dat wealth or smart and stop ranting about Lagos becos u don't own the place . It belongs to Nigeria.

clever way to control immigration, ensure tax is being paid and if all buds well, an emergence of welfare state (in my dreams).

It's all a ruse to put a stop to the influx of the ibos (lol). A very welcomed ruse, i must say.

Wat a foolish plan from a foolish minded people. The whites dat invented such strategy have not had such success in curbing immigration how much more a city in our united country and united ecowas. Rubbish!

Anyway more yoruba migrant from neighboring states will suffer the most as business people dat pay tax like Igbos will not be hindered by this rubbish as long as we have our money. I predict all yorubas returning to their village. grin

Its no longer surprising the speed at which threads degenerate to ethnic bashing arenas here on Nairaland.

Some people are just full of it.
