Fellow Nairaland users, I'd like to share this piece of info with you.

It's about the discrimination, lack of jobs and disappointment immigrants (Nigerians inclusive) are facing in Canada.

The website is http://www.notcanada.com/

Please read through the forum at http://www.notcanada.com/forum.htm

I'd like to read from Nigerians based in Canada, to confirm if this is the true situation or not, else it might be a destiny wrecking move to relocate there.

General comments are most welcome as well.

Cheers!

Man min
I have spent the whole month making arrangement for applying to a school in Northern Alberta., but with this I think I need a change of mind. I have a job here in Nigeria and my take home is 1.6million Naira per annum.
Think I should just plan my life here and may be someday go for a visit to satisfy my wife

Hi
Nice to know you are in Uk. I get offer from UK basically in the oil sector as an operator or Production Technician, but then the interview ends when they know I do not have a UK work permit.
Is it a good idea to move to UK I can fund my wife for a four years programs in one of the Universities and that gives me the opportunity to get a work permit.

my friend, 1.6million a year? that's really nice. so don't leave that for life oversea where you would have to start all over. keep it up wink
Re: Is this truly happening in Canada? by omega25red(m): 3:26pm On Aug 07, 2007
Omoge i agree ooo people think you just get to the countries overseas and you become an instant success. It is not like that at all my mother had to work hard for me and my sisters to be able to have a chance in the U.S. I say all this to say that if you are doing great some where continue to work hard enjoy your success instead of leaving to start all over and in a lot of case struggle with the lose of your dignity because people who aren't on your level to begin with would test you. cool

Surprised you can fund your wife in a UK school for 4 years earning N1.6M. Do you have another source of income? Well, Undergraduates here spend three years in school and the 4th year would normally be the masters programme year, except of course her programme is Phd. I consider N1.6M to be the average pay for a fresh graduate working in any of the good companies in Naija. I think you will get a job in your area of specialisation if you've got the right to stay here, so the student visa idea for your wife may not be bad afterall.

Have friends in Canada and the stories are mixed. Some still get very good jobs and getting it may come with challenges and things like sometimes having to accept a lower job level and later rising to the normal level or even a higher job level. Some also have to go to school again to get more qualifications or a canadian education. Those on ground there should give the actual situation report.

well i guess in erstern countires, they dont regard Nigerian education 2 be authentic so people normally go and upgrade and do get good jobs, am in Canada and ma siblings all have good jobs, ma elder sis is a business analyst and earns 80,000 per year plus other benefit, if u have u r focused and be pateince enough 2 go 2 skool (atleast as a graduate 4rom Nigeria0, u dont start 4rom 1st year per say, there is a future here for those who are focused

@Temin

earning 1.6 million in Naija means u are not doing badly here; GOING OVERSEAS IS NOT THE ALWAYS THE ULTIMATE cool . . . BABA GOD DEY HELP HIN PEOPLE EVERYWHERE ANYWHERE cheesy

u could however call 08055419498 or 08059820301 for work permit issues in UK, barring unforeseen circumstances u get your visa in 3weeks  cheesy

@kitaun

Haba

since when did you become a suspicious agent

@temin

better stay in Nigeria okay besides 1.6 million is really not that much in Naija so this isuue of being able to sponsor you wife on that salary I don't think so

Even if ur wife studies and you want to stay go abroad as her dependent the visa officials will quiz you on why you want to leave nigeria when you are earning well

why not stay at you job for awhile and wait till you can get a study leave
then go for a second degree urself , after that you can decide if working abroad is the right decision
you may find out that coming back to nigeria with a foreign degree with nigerian work experience may improve your CV

I actually opened a thread here; https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-67208.0.html

u could go and pass ur comments there . . . my mistake here was to give the name of the coy - Hilary Grantham

so hope that alleviates ur fear about me becoming a 419 grin grin; I remain my humble self wink

in Nigeria as engineers on a salary of about 7Million per annum

thats about 56,000$ per annum.

Then its is foolish to run away abroad.

You know what, not many people earn that abroad, plus they pay about 30% tax.

Earning $56,000 in Nigeria in a professional job means that there is the potential to earn near double that amount in similar jobs overseas. It does happen! Note that such an individual in Nigeria definitely has several years experience.

igbonla:

$56,000 is peanuts my friend! I don't know what profession you are in but you can research what consultant corrosion engineers earn and let me know; this is not an entry level position.

There is no need for argument over what somebody is leaving behind when relocating, as there are other considerations for such decision. Believe me, I will take lower pay to be closer home if I have the opportunity.

I can not over emphasise that people relocate for different reasons.
