Tinubu resolves Ganduje, Jubrin rift over Kano House of Reps ticket

All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has resolved the crisis of confidence between Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje and former House of Representatives member from the state, Abdulmunin Jibrin.

Jibrin caused media and social media uproar yesterday afternoon when he tweeted he was leaving the APC for another party following his inability to get a return ticket to the House of Representatives.

It was alleged that Governor Ganduje has not forgiven Jibrin for working against his re-election for second term in 2019.

Jibrin was elected for third term in the lower chamber of the National Parliament in 2019 to represent Kiru/Bebeji federal constituency, but lost the seat to a PDP contender in November 2019 after a Court of Appeal judgment annulled his victory and ordered for a rerun.

The PDP candidate was reportedly supported by Ganduje to defeat Jibrin and since then, both men have been politically opposed to each other even though they are both reportedly supporting the presidential aspiration of Asiwaju Tinubu.

Jibrin was named the Director General of Tinubu Support Groups Management Council last year and he has been among the main campaigners for the presidential bid of the former Lagos State Governor.

Asiwaju Tinubu, according to WesternPost sources intervened yesterday on behalf of Jibrin with Governor Ganduje, who promised to resolve the local problem the former lawmaker was having in his constituency.

Immediately after Tinubu’s call to the governor, the Kano State Chairman of APC, Abdullahi Abbas, issued a statement inviting all the parties to the dispute to a meeting today (Sunday).

According to him, a meeting of all aspirants from Kiru/Bebeji federal constituency had been called and Jibrin had signified his intention to attend.

Jibrin also had a meeting with his state governor earlier on Sunday where all their political differences have been laid to rest according to a Kano Government House source.

Abdulmumin Jibrin's problems are two-fold and it will be extremely difficult to solve them.

You see, Jibrin has always presented himself as a new breed politician, a young guy who has gone into politics in order to change and reform it. This has always created problems for him. He was chairman of the House of Representatives Appropriation Committee and he raised an alarm that the 2017 budget was being "padded" (padding means that people were adding to the budget in order to steal the extra money). This led to him being removed from his position as chairman and suspended from the House for 180 days. Such a person will always have problems in Nigeria's political landscape.


1) Although he is a member of the APC, he was openly against the re-election of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in 2019. Governor Ganduje was filmed collecting bribes from a contractor for a works project and this had made him unpopular in Kano. Jibrin openly expressed his view that Ganduje should not be re-elected. He expressed displeasure when the election was declared inconclusive. At a point he even tweeted that President Buhari should resign. He wrote that Buhari was a good man, but that he needed to rest and so he should resign and go and rest and he wrote that Buhari's family could be compensated with a ministerial position. He later deleted the tweet. Governor Ganduje does not forget or forgive.


2) I have previously written about this man when I wrote about the structural problems in the Social Democratic Party (SDP) ahead of the 1991 election. The SDP controlled Lagos and Kano, but General Shehu Musa Yar'Adua's group within the SDP tried to hijack the governorship position from the Awolowo supporters in Lagos and Aminu Kano supporters in Kano. This made the SDP lose the election in the two states and Michael Otedola and Kabiru Gaya, both of the NRC, were elected governors in Lagos and Kano respectively.

Kabiru Gaya has since gotten a strong grip on his area of Kano. Mr Gaya has represented that area in the Senate since 2007 and although he was in the ANPP, he was able to survive the onslaught of both Kwankwaso and Ganduje. Along with other members of the ANPP, Kabiru Gaya joined the APC and he is currently Vice President Yemi Osinbajo's point man in Kano. Kabiru Gaya and Abdulmumin Jibrin are from the same area. Of course Kabiru Gaya will want to have complete control of the APC structure in the area and this means that he will determine who gets elected into the House of Representatives from that area.


Abdulmumin Jibrin is contesting for a seat in the House of Representatives and with all his problems in Kano, it is not certain that he will get the APC nomination for that seat and that's why he is having problems with the APC in his locality and has decided to move to another political party where he can get a nomination.

It's just like what happened to Dawisu. Dawisu has no future in Kano APC after he repeatedly annoyed Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje (by tweeting that Buhari should resign) and therefore he had to leave.


Ganduje is ruthless and he does not forget or forgive.

I have found the pictures that I was searching for. Ganduje has punished Jibrin in the past and he is set to do it again. Jibrin won re-election to the House of Representatives in 2019, but the court nullified his election and ordered a re-run. Governor Ganduje backed the PDP candidate, Datti Yako, against Jibrin and Jibrin lost. Not long afterwards, Mr Yako, who had been a follower of Kwankwaso (who was in the PDP) defected to the APC. That was Ganduje's way of punishing Abdulmumin Jibrin and he is set to do it again.

(Jibrin probably thought that he could escape Ganduje's wrath by campaigning for Bola Tinubu. Ganguje is a strong ally of Tinubu).

3) You might remember that the 2019 governorship election in Kano was contentious and it seemed like Ganduje was going to lose and then the election was suddenly declared "inconclusive". Well, that's when he tweeted what is in the first screenshot.
