Do not use "US", "American Indians", and "generous" in the same sentence please. Till this day, the US is very cruel to Native Americans. For lack of kinder words, the American government doesn't give a damn about them. Visit a reservation or talk to a Native American born and raised on a reservation. They'll tell you.

I'm aware sad the reservations look like 3rd world countries. I think the main negative things the u.s did to American Indians was raping their culture & exposing them to alcholol etc. Which trapped them in a self destructive cycle.

The u.s is trying to help, Perhaps in the wrong way tho.

As kony pointed out a similar thing happened to a.a's

also the natives had women as the head of the family and tribe. these women could be married to by giving gifts to their parents, or in another sense, the americans took it as buying the women and they started assimilation techniques by buying native women and marrying them and having mixedd kids and also by forcing native children to attend missionary schools and integrate with american culture and forget their own. angry angry angry angry angry angry

African Americans are living in first-class heaven in comparison to Native Americans, I'm telling you lol. For my cultural anthropology course, we had a graduate speak to us. She's Native American and was able to escape from her own reservation; she graduated with Psychology and Criminal Justice majors. Before high school, most Native American children have attempted suicide or have a sibling that has attempted and/or succeeded. They make up such a minority of the US now, but if you look at stats by ethnic group, they're #1 in suicide, violation, diabetes, alcoholism, alcohol-related deaths, and more. After that girl spoke to us, my thinking changed. The US isn't doing enough at all.

Africans came to the US as slaves, which they survived. Kony can keep talking, but Native Americans went through worse: genocide. White settlers were throwing Native American infants into bonfires for Christ's sake. The money they receive from casinos is not much. He should take a trip to an area concentrated with AAs, maybe in Mississippi, then compare it to a Native American reservation. The poorest AA town is luxury compared to what Native Americans are going through. African Americans aren't living off of commodities. I don't know where his thinking is.

I get were your comming from, but ur making the black experience look like a cakewalk.
At say. . . 1950 a.a's and Indians were @ the same place socially. In some instances the Indians even had it better. The Cherokee in tennesee even had black slaves at one point.

Well, my point isn't to make it look like a cakewalk. I've studied both African American and Native American history. I'm not calling myself an expert, but from what I have read, heard, and watched, Native Americans have had it worst. Jews endured the Holocaust and can tell the tale because it's the past. African Americans endured slavery and second class citizenship and can tell tales because it's the past. As for Native Americans? They have no tale to tell because it's ongoing. They may not be hunted like they once were, but they have been sectioned off by the American government onto plots of land that basically have no government. A man can go there and rape all females in an entire family and he won't be tried. At least, in African American communities, if there's a wrong-doing, we know about it. Racially-motivated crimes, injustice, discrimination, etc. The news will pick it up. When was the last time you saw coverage on crimes committed at a Native American reservation? As for me, I can tell you that I've never heard of such. I found an article about six weeks ago on Yahoo or so, however, about how thousands of criminal cases from Native American reservations had been dropped. Literally, thrown out the window. Uproar? None.

I'm not trying to minimize or lessen what happened to African Americans. Or Jews, since I mentioned them. Both have endured horrendous violations of human rights that I'd wish on no one. The point I'm trying to make is that a lot of people think Native Americans have reservations and live in stable conditions when, in fact, the truth is so contrary. I'm just grateful that we've had leaders such as MLK and Rosa Parks to grant Africans/African Americans better life. We as Africans/Africans Americans have so much to be thankful for. Kony is asking what we got for slavery. We were paid with freedom. Citizenship. His children can dream whatever they like, go wherever they like, befriend whomever they like, etc. Nothing in life is perfect but life as an African/Black in America is much better. Things have improved. I don't see any improvement with Native Americans. It's simply one bad to another.

@ogugua88,
I hear you.
In other words, you are saying it is better to consider the cup half full as opposed to half empty.

Personally, I do not find the type of questionnaire highlighted by the OP at all offensive as long as there is a direct equivalent for the label 'black' (white) also present.
But I do find the word 'coloured' which still gets banded around in parts of Europe, especially in the construction industry and in conversations involving African migrants.
The word 'darkie' gets used quite often within the Nigerian community in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands as well sad angry sad

Yes. That's exactly what I meant. I'm busy trying to explain myself in paragraphs, and you said it in a phrase lol. smiley

I dislike the terms "coloured" and "darkie" as well. Such a shame.

Hello everyone. Id like to discuss the absence of proper "ethnic" recognition of our various ethnic origins in the West. Im sure many of you who live abroad in the USA or Europe may have come across a form like this.

Check your ethnicity:

[ ]White

[ ]Hispanic

[ ]Black/Afrcian American

[ ]Asian

[ ]Native American

[ ]Other please state:______

As for myself forms like this anger me since there is no clear option for my ethnicity. I am not "black" because black is a skin colour not an ethnicity and I am not an "African American" since I am not the descendant of slaves. And most of the time such a form does not even leave the option "other" restricting my ability to properly identify myself. Ive had second thoughts of sueing such organisations for not giving proper respect to my ethnic origin or properly allowing me to identify myself.

I'd like to know how those of us here in Nigeria and and Abroad feel when confronted with such forms and how you go about answering them.
