The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, has confirmed the arrest of no fewer than 35 motorcyclists and the seizure of 195 motorcycles during the ongoing enforcement of the state government ban on motorcycle operations in the state.

Addressing journalists at the command headquarters in the Ikeja area of the state on Friday, Alabi said the command had commenced preparations to tackle motorcyclists who may want to migrate to other areas of the state to continue their trade.

He noted that the ban was in phases, adding that strategic measures were being developed to subdue any challenge that could arise from the implementation of the ban.

Speaking on the clash along the Lagos Badagry Expressway on Thursday, Alabi said, “During the operation, they (motorcyclists) were accosted when they became violent and mobilised their other colleagues to attack our police officers.

“When we got this information, we had to mobilise our tactical and operational commanders to reinforce our policemen on the ground and they (motorcyclists) were subdued. In the course of doing that, we arrested 35 suspects and impounded 195 motorcycles. Normalcy was restored immediately.”

Reacting to questions on the after-effect of the ban and its implication on other areas in the state, Alabi said efforts were ongoing to tackle any attendant consequences induced by the ban.

He said, “On the ban of the state government that will take effect from June 1 and as to people (motorcyclists) migrating from that side to other areas, all the area commanders and DPOs were there when the government met with us. All of us are aware of the backlash that could happen because of this ban but we are prepared for it.

''Any security challenges that could arise because of this ban in the local government areas, we are ready to contend with it. We have told them to put in place strategic measures on how to confront this holistically. We are envisaging that some people (motorcyclists) will migrate from those areas but this ban is in phases, and we are prepared for that and will confront the challenge if it arises.“

The Police acted quickly. We know firsthand how badly things could get when it comes to bikemen and Ojo. Plus I think the presence of Ojo barracks, not so far from where the seizures were made helped do a quick format of the violent natures. grin

On the flip side, this is likely to distract the police from their original duties as it is a very lucrative venture. Also, the only ones that would be affected are those with no connection in the forces themselves.

On my way back home yesterday, when the driver parked to pick/drop passengers, there was this minibus driving one way in the now-expanded dual carriage highway. There was no reason to do this obviously as there was no traffic on either lane but it didn't bother the driver from breaking the law. Anyways, police pounced on them but immediately they saw the army personnel sitting on the passenger side, they smiled and let the driver go. undecided

Bros this is not about is thought being a reflection of kickback and bribery.

This is what I have experience gon gon in Lagos 2020 during the covid 19 lockdown period

Oboyyyyy, nor be small money those police begin collect from okada man wey them catch him okada o. To the extent that when they saw they were making a lot of money from the captured okadas, they now took it as business and forgot the security issues they were supposed to be handling, and they seriously focus on catching okada everyday, and even went ahead to place a price tag on each of the bikes. Depends on how the bike take new or old, na in go determined how much the okada man go pay for the bike. They were collecting up to 25 to 40k for the new bikes, then 10 to 20k for the olds ones.

So, that's is not a reflection of who that guy is, but it's a reflection of what the Nigeria police can do.

Motorcycles in Lagos state are like parasites, they are endangering lives and the cyclists are behaving as if they are from another planet, if other successive regime after Fashila had followed his footsteps,by now, motorcycles would have been forgotten in Lagos State .

But the law enforcement officers are bigger than the law. They seize bikes and start using it. Half of the police in lagos state are into okada business and bus driving as their side hustle. The painful part now is, the okada riding fraction of the police will start charging some ridiculous prices cos of shortage of okada. Just imagine from falomo to sanfil eavesdropped a mopol charging #800 last...

Police are worse. Haven't seen a non-cleptlomanic , conscience driven, selfless and responsible police officer.

If you speak with those Okada riders during trip, you will see how responsible and intelligent they are including the Abokis.

You don't expect a sane society when the judiciary,the enforcements are worse than a common criminal.

I still believe the Babatunde Raji Fashola's Approach to this menace is still the best.
*Seize the bikes;
*Crush them;
*Send the alien cyclists in droves back to their states of origin.

That way, they'll realize they can't do 'anyhow' in Lagos State.

Because believe it or not, most of them are terrorists in disguise as motorcyclists.

Most, if not all of them are armed with guns and/or daggers.
Their tactics of being in every nook and cranny of Lagos State is alarming.

Their nefarious activities always going unchecked since Babatunde Raji Fashola left office.

I remember seeing them loading trucks with their bikes and migrating to wherever they came from while Babatunde Raji Fashola was governor.

Please, bring back that method.
