Peter Obi's resignation from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) is a wrong move that will rather delay his presidential hope than bring it closer.

Two days ago, Wednesday 25th May 2022, the news broke out about Peter Obi's resignation from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) on which platform he was contesting the 2023 presidential election, until his resignation. When I first read the story, I couldn’t believe it as I took it to be fake news: No political analyst foresaw it and it was unthinkable that he could do that.

Well, that was his choice but some breaking issues his shocking resignation brings to the table of political discourse are whether the startling step at nearly the eve of his party primary election was a levelheaded decision and what will be his next move.

From the look of things, it is obvious that Obi, by his resignation from the PDP, is not telling Nigerians he has buried his presidential dream. So if Obi still hopes to fulfill his presidential ambition, then on what political party does he hope to achieve that in the next eight years when it will be another time for him to try his luck? Surely it cannot be PDP unless he rejoins the party. Can it be APC? Not likely, as the party's ticket is sure to be rotated, at least for the next sixteen years, between the Southwest and the Northern regions.

Alternatively, will Obi join the now burgeoning Kwankwanso's NNDP, form a new party, or rejoins is old party (APGA) for him to actualize his dream of the number one post in the country? Except by unforeseen scenario, non of these possibilities presents a sure hope for his presidential dream. If the above options are not sure to deliver Obi's presidential ambition, then it is obvious that Obi, by his resignation, has impatiently exited the ship sailing him to Aso rock—at least for the next eight years.

Before his resignation, Obi was unarguably the strongest aspirant of Igbo origin in the PDP. He has a great chance to receive the party's baton for the presidential race whenever the party zones its presidential ticket to the south. But for the PDP to effectively deliver Obi's presidential dream, the party tactically has to stoop to gain power at the center that controls virtually all the institutions and apparatus needed to wield power.

Considering the political culture and voting pattern in the country, a good political analyst knows that Obi as an easterner has a dim chance to defeat any of Tinubu, Osibanjo, Amachi, Lawan and other contenders on the APC Platform that is certain to receive the bloc votes of the north. Northern votes have been known to determine election victory than votes from the south.

By this reasoning, Obi— playing as a political strategist — should have supported his party's strong aspirant from the north, who can muscle up with the APC flag bearer. Should the PDP wins the coming presidential election with a northern candidate, such victory by the party makes Obi's dream closely more achievable in eight years than any other option he opts for. It is a poor strategy for Obi, who is contesting the presidential election for the first time, to disheartenmently chicken out of the race when the likes of Atiku, Tinubu, and Saraki, who have been in the race for decades, continue their struggle.

By withdrawing his PDP membership and from the 2023 race, Obi has shifted the achievement of his presidential dream beyond an attainable calender of eight years to a farther uncertain future date. What a politically misguided move!

APGA is his best choice, because he was never going to buy delegate votes in Pdp.
