Pyo 2023: How Osinbajo Can Help North-west End Banditry In Nigeria by hnm2023: 4:25pm On May 30, 2022
The activities of outlaws sometimes referred to as bandits, were drama series we watched on TV as kids, little did we know that in the nearest future, the things we saw on our television screens will sadly, become our reality. According to the Centre of Democracy and Development for West Africa (CDD), banditry in today's Nigeria has eaten deep into most parts of the Northwestern region, resulting in the death of over 12,000 persons, leaving about one million displaced, roaming about the region in search for shelter, food, water and above all, a safe haven where they will be free from all the menace of the bandits.
Thus, to bring to an end banditry in the region, Professor Yemi Osibanjo has traced the root causes of banditry in the Northwest to these three; poor justice system, ethnic cleansing and criminality propelled by poverty. All of which are all in line with the report published by the Center of Democracy and Development for West Africa (CDD) titled; "Northwest Nigeria’s Bandit Problem: Explaining the Conflicts Drivers". No doubt he has made these cardinal points as his priority and vision to transform Nigeria's security and intelligence architecture if he eventually emerges victorious in the party's primaries come this May.
First of all, committees will be set up to ensure that justice will be delivered to all those whose cattle has been rustled in the past, a reconciliatory committee will also be set up to end the incessant communal clash and attacks perceived to be in disguise of ethnic cleansing, and lastly, provisions will be made to empower the working population of these communities, so no one has a reason to embark on criminality as a means of survival.
On this note, severally, the Vice-President, Professor Yemi Osibanjo has spoken on the need to return these displaced persons back to their ancestral homes, because as we all know, "there's no place like home" and these displaced persons, most of whom are farmers want to return to their farms and livelihood, to avoid an impending danger, where many others will take to crime for survival.
In times like this, the Vice-President shares the pain of ordinary Nigerians and in his efforts to understand the causes and profer long lasting solutions to the issue of banditry, he has occasionally paid visits and sympathize with the victims of these banditry attacks notably in January, 2022 when more than 300 gun men on motorcycle stormed eight villages in Anka local area in Zamfara State, killed an estimated 200 persons, leaving about 10,000 displaced as revealed by Sadiya Umar Farouq, the minister of humanitarian affairs. The Vice-President did not only condemn the attack but had a meeting with his boss, President Muhammadu Buhari and immediately the Nigerian military responded on the order of the President, stormed the Gusami forest and west Tsamre village in Zamfara, killing more than 100 bandits including two of their leaders in an air strike. Definitely, the Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo is a man of action, and he perfectly understands that desperate times, calls for desperate action.
It will also be recalled that on 23 June, 2021, when the Vice-President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo received the Oluyin of Iyin Ekiti, Oba Adeola Adeniyi Ajakaiye at the Aso Villa, where he reiterated that local and state governments must collaborate with the federal government in tackling insecurity. As it relates to banditry, he mentioned that traditional rulers in the Northwest must collaborate with the federal government to talk to the people in their communities and educate them on how these vices will end up destroying their very own communities and endager the lives of their own people. In addition to radically transforming the Nigerian security and intelligence architecture, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has stated that no Nigerian deserves to live like a foreigner in their own country.
Hence, an Osinbajo ticket as the candidate of the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) will be a step in the right direction if the Northwest, the Northwest APC delegates and Nigerians in general want banditry to be a thing of the past. It should also be sound and clear that an Osinbajo Presidency comes with a lot of experience in tackling and providing solutions. What Nigeria needs currently is a problem solver and luckily, we have PYO in the race to lead over 200 million of us to the desired promised land.
