The Islamic north is so powerful because they are the largest collection of Nigerians who have the same culture and values, having been forcefully converted to political Islam.

The south is very diverse and every subgroup has a distinct culture, language, and values.

Southerners aren't stupid or bad at politics. We just don't see ourselves as the same, because we're not.

Perhaps we need to forge a new super-culture based around progressive values in order to compete with the muslim north. Democracy, responsible capitalism, human rights, etc.

A lot of those commenters don't even understand what he's saying well.
The major reason why they're unified is two:
(1) Religion
Islam is a major unifier among the North unlike South which has diverse religion especially in SW therefore making it easier to speak to their ideology and since most of them are not educated, they get easily manipulated.

(2) Language
Hausa language is commonly spoken even among non-hausa in the north which makes this another major tool in uniting them. In opposition to the major claim that Hausa is the most populated tribe in Nigeria, I somehow disagree, Hausa is just the most spoken language

That's the major reason it's easier for any region in the North to fortify their goal for each other cos they see themselves as one. The two Northern president came from the same region and even the same state(Katsina) and none of them made it a fuse. Meanwhile, it'll be a problem in the south.

This is how it should always work. We should compete among ourselves in the south , then the highest bidder get all our support, but in a case where one person is docile and he's expecting the other to submit to him for no reason is absurd.

Naturally, everyone should earn it and we should do as if we don't know each other, but for the fact that our neighbor(North) keeps using the unity card , we have to buckle ours too just for formality and our goal sake.
Meanwhile in the real sense, we're not in any way the same, we're totally different, and that's the bitter truth . Our culture and everything is completely different

Is he just finding out. Haven't the East made this argument severally and told you about helplessness of the south under one nigeria?

What did you do? You rushed to Nairaland political section and created a thread 'Nairaland says no to seccesion' because you felt you were standing against Ndigbo. Now e don hook una for throat. Una don dey lament.

Dem never show una say una be mumu. Ndi one nigeria. grin

I personally take a few steps backwards when the subject is politics.

But nonetheless, this is more of a vivid fact than politics.

The North has a high voting power born to immense cooperation, population and above all agricultural productivity.

I see no reason why any right judging person would back disunity in Nigeria. If the North could decide to hand over presidency to the South. That shows a true respect for federalism.

Igbos have been sounding this warning from the onset. The south is just a tool for the north to use or discard as they deem fit or necessary. Let's forge our own country or fight the north together but the south west said no because of promise of presidency. Nonsense, we must remain in nigeria and continue drowning.

You said it all

As a matter of fact the hausas are minority

However, It'll very hard for the whole South to unite

Religion and Language is not the north unifier. There were several political actors in the north that were not on the same ideology and party.Old Kano was in Aminu Kano grip and alligned with Ncnc, Joseph Tarka was for middle belt,Waziri Ibrahim though in Npc was the factor in Borno.

The unity we see today emanated from the 60s event that placed them in vantage position to follow up in redesigning Nigeria. Merit or not, they are in charge to spread out mouth watering position to fellow northerners and also give favours with ease to friends down south

The south can never defeat the north politically in an election, unless the north wants to be defeated.

Disintegration is the way to go otherwise the south will remain slaves in their homelands.

They are powerful because they control the Armed Forces! Simple! People always misunderstand the saying "power comes from the barrel of the gun". But look at that deeply and you will see it is true! Power can't be enforced without reasonable force! It doesn't go more than that. Some of you are starting to attribute all sorts of extra terrestrial political intelligence to these northerners who in my own view, play very predictable brand of politics.

The best thing that the northerners did was to not fight the British so virulently as the igbos did. It made them trusted allies of the West post independence and they have been leveraging on that to solidify their political domination in Nigeria ever since, while the British provides them with the international diplomatic cover they need to do so. Have you asked why there is no term like "The Biafra Genocide" in serious international discussions, even when the killing of almost 5 million easterners in a space of just 3 year should qualify as nothing but genocide? It's the British working! And the North pays the Western world handsomely for this. That's why the British and the Americans own most of Nigerias Oil and gas deposits.

Secondly, you have to appreciate the events of 1966. For whatever reasons, the whole country joined the north to decimate the igbo domination of The Nigerian Army post January 15th coup. The north took over permanently and have been calling the shots ever since. The southern groups that helped the north to take over, became docile and just watched from the sidelines. And we had endless northern instigated military coups. These coups led to a litany of military tyrants who created endless states and local governments and government agencies and made sure that all favoured the north. They even relocated the federal capital to Abuja!

What you are seeing politically today are the benefits of these actions taken during the military days. The fake census, the huge Local governments and states that produce more delegates during election periods. The endless military and Police posts in the North and commanders of northern extraction, who will unleash force to see through any government policies that favor the north. That is it. Every major ethnic group that has dominated power in every country played similar games. Whether the Hutus in Rwanda, the quasi Arabs in Sudan, the kukuyis in Kenya or the ewe in Togo. If you want to change things, you have to find a way to uproot them, the same way the North found a way to uproot the igbos in July 1966.

South is not divided just greedy ...a simple zoning agreement can't even be respected and you want to blame the north ?

Yorubas and south south are to be blamed

If southern governors had insisted that it's the turn of south east who born north

Atiku even offered to step down if it was zoned to south east but wike said no ...stop blaming north

Sorry you don't know this Northern people very well. I just dey laugh...

They don't want to divide their votes between APC and PDP. They want a Southern APC candidate so that they can massively vote in Atiku. They prioritize holding onto power regardless of the party that brings it their way. If they don't get it as a party, they don't mind getting it as a region.

Just watch and see...

There is never a point in time in Nigeria, where the ticket has ever been microzone.

And there was no time in the South we have agreed on zoning among each other.

I'm glad some Southerners are fighting, is better they fight and lose than to step down like cowards.

The only man correct in this political saga is OUK.
South, GEJ + OBJ= 14 years.
North, UMR + GMB = 10 years.
For their to be equity, the north must complete their 4 years.
Anybody saying it should come to the south should be specific ( SouthEast) or forget it.
Southwest cannot blackmail us with southern presidency qhe they are fighting for themselves. Infact Tinubu confessed he installed a Northerner against a Southerner and He now wants our support.
Let the North complete their remaining 4 years then we can tell about the Southeast not even southwest or south south.
Before you start thinking from your anus am from Rivers state.

Secondly Pidgin language is widely spoken there too. .

Sw shot themselves in the foot... Tinubus greed is the reason y the North will be Elected 2023... Tinubu is a Naive and greedy politician... only his people are decieving themselves, thinking he is smart... Obasanjo is a smarter politician... only if Tinubu rooted for a South Easterner , the North would have lost out... Obasanjo told the SW candidates to drop their ambition and support SE and that they were playing towards the Northern trap , but they all refused , believing their Fulani masters ... the moment PDP sensed that SE will not have a chance in APC , they elected Atiku as their running mate and the Northern politicians know that the SS and SE will never support a SW candidate ... so they know SW will end up wailing cos no other region will stand by them...

SW greed lead by Tinubu is the reason y South will once again loose the number 1 position come 2023 ....
