Dredging Of River Niger Will Soon Be Completed by ak47mann(m): 3:18pm On Jul 24, 2011
THE Managing Director of Nigeria Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Achitect Aminu Ahmed Yar' Adua has said that the dredging of River Niger will soon be completed.

Architect Yar’Adua added that when completed the dredging would go a long way in improving water transportation and the economy of the country.
The MD, who also called Nigerian investors and other international cooperate business organisations to exploit the benefit of the dredging of River Niger, noted that the dredging will reduce tension on Nigerian roads as many goods will be transported via waterways.

He made the called while speaking with newsmen on the important of the dreging of River Niger to the people of Nigeria.

He said the Nigeria Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) is discussing with the Nigeria National Petroleum Company NNPC and other cooperate multinational companies on how they could utilize the dredged River Niger to convey raw materials and finished products across the nation at no stress.

His words, “We are still discussing. It will not only safe them high transport cost, it will guarantee safety of both life and the goods such company or firm are conveying at that particular time.’’

He stressed the need for constant navigation on the dredged channels, a factor he said will help reduce the high cost of maintenance and expand the channels as well.

He stated that NIWA will soon commence full time waterways transport scheme across the Lower River Niger at a moderate price to demonstrate to all Nigerians that the waters are not only safe but also ready for usage.

I don't think its mere talks, at least they have completed the port in Onitsha except for some portion of the River Niger which are at the final stages of dredge completion

We need pictures like pictures for Asaba International Airport and Enugu International Airport. angry
Re: Dredging Of River Niger Will Soon Be Completed by chino11(m): 6:10pm On Jul 24, 2011
Asaba airport is largely uncompleted and a major financial drain pipe for uduaghas and Iboris. Enugu airport is to the best of my knowledge nothing more than colonial airstrip. Its an insult to the psyche of Ndigbo to call that an international airport, that is if you have visited the airport. I, for one cannot make the typographical error of calling that an international airport

I normally arrive in the East either through Port Harcourt, or go to Lagos and fly to Owerri.

it would actually because they are dredging it. so if they drag deep enough, it should be able be float the biggest ships. Also they need to take the width of the river bank into account.

Lets hope nigeria government does the right thing if not, it means it is only meant to small ships.

but that aside, it would be linked to kogi as well for the north

If only we can get it right the economies of the states along the Niger will benefit. It will also decongest the lagos port.

That's correct. It could be used as a transhipment port (shipment of cargo to an intermediate destination and then from there to another destination) if not deep enough though.

Mr. Manager, opening the Niger for traffic is not a destination but a journey. As you sit in your office rainfall is busy re-silting the place. That is why the much hyped provision of infrastructure is not an isolated procedure but must be done in conjunction with the private sector and in the interest of the people. The nature of that river is similar to clearing your farm of weeds then spending weeks looking for seeds to plant. Stand by for another multi-billion naira contract to do it all again. The maintenance of that river is a private thing. Good cart before horse. Enjoy the ride.

What is mini ships? Only tug-barges can navigate through, unless barges are classed as mini ships
