UNICEF reports that about 800,000 global deaths occur each year from malaria infection, with approximately 90 per cent of these deaths occurring in Africa.
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), has said that about 300,000 Nigerians die of malaria infection every year.

The director of the agency’s Field ‘A’ Office, Enugu, Charles Nzuki, told journalists in Makurdi, Benue State, that over 97 per cent of Nigeria's population were at risk of the disease, with most victims being children under the age of five.

Nkuzi said that the federal government was keeping up with the fight against infant mortality by making provision for appropriate malaria treatment through the implementation of the Affordable Medicines for Malaria (AMFM) and the distribution of 63 million insecticidal nets.

He, however, said that more needed to be done in order to confront the threat malaria poses to the nation.
