Imo trains doctors, others on emergency rescue mission

Determined to rescue the health sector and save lives of its citizens, Imo State government, on Wednesday, concluded the training of doctors, paramedics and security personnel in emergency response mission with respect to accidents and other disasters.

No fewer than 1,000 participants, drawn from the public and private sectors, benefited from the exercise.

About 15 specialists delivered lectures on how to save lives during health-related emergencies.

The special adviser to the state governor on health, Dr Sylvanus Amaechi, whose office coordinated the two-day seminar in collaboration with INFAX Nigeria Limited, described the exercise as “a huge scientific and academic programme geared towards taking health care to the door steps of Imo citizens.”

Dr Amaechi, a renowned orthopedic surgeon and a former president of Nigerian Orthopedic Association, told newsmen that Governor Rochas Okorocha approved the seminar, to keep medical practitioners and security agencies involved in health matters abreast of developments in the management of trauma and accidents.

He said the seminar was conducted free of charge.

He said professionals in the areas of surgery, orthopedic, gynecology, radiography, neo-natal medicine and other specialised areas lectured the participants on quick response measures to emergencies.

“Our governor is not only the commander of free education, he knows that we have to be alive and healthy to benefit from free education, hence his emphasis on this seminar,” Dr Amaechi quipped.

He said the rescue agenda of the Okorocha’s administration was all embracing and that health formed the integral part of his mission.

Dr Amaechi said it was expected that the seminar participants would avail their colleagues of the knowledge they acquired in furtherance of the health policy of the state government.

The special adviser announced that the General Hospital, Umugum,a where the seminar was held, would soon become a specialist hospital.

This is commendable as many lives are lost in nigeria because of lack of such trainings. aI hope other governors emulate this for the good of the whole nation where many people are already half dead. I also hope it will be a continuing exercise with refresher courses and will eventually extend to non-medical personnel. This could save the life of the next man anytime.

It's a good thing Rochie boy is finally reading Fashola's lecture hand out, but for you to think the rest of the world should be emulating what you people should have been doing and what the rest of the world including many states in our Nigeria have been pioneering sounds very ignorant, absurd and ridiculous.

I'm glad that you people are just seeking and finding civilization after the rest of the world don find am decades ago sha.

The article below depicts how we do it in Lagos,

LASEMA’s Best Emergency Management Agency

[b]

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, has been declared the 2010 best organized and responsive emergency management in Nigeria by the Conference on Disaster, Safety and Security Management.

The award was organized by the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA; Central Emergency Medical Clearing House, CEMCH and the Institute of Disaster, Safety and Security Management.

The conference, in a letter to LASEMA said the award for the 2010 best disaster management agency in the country is now LASEMA and lauded the agency for being in the vanguard of rescuing people in times of mishaps.

General Manager/Chief Executive Officer, LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, noted that the award did not come as a surprise in view of the progress recorded by the agency since its inception.

“With all sense of modesty, we relish the numerous achievements of LASEMA as the first emergency agency established by law in Nigeria. We have impacted positively in all areas of emergency like fire, flood, traffic accidents and medical interventions,” he said.

Oke-Osanyintolu promised that the agencywould not relent in its effort to pursue strategies that would ensure disaster risk reduction to the barest level across the

We're prepared for any disaster - LASEMA Boss

How prepared is your agency in the eventuality of another disaster?
We don't pray for it, but we are always on ground. Gov. Fashola established this agency from the scratch and today it's a model for other states, including the FCT. He has assented to the Emergency Bill, he has constructed a relief camp and two others in Igando and Lekki are under construction. We have the best set of equipment that can easily guarantee saving of life and property.

Every state has emergency units. What we are talking about here is not emergency agencies but empowering all doctors and paramedical personel to be trained in emergency responses not just the emergency agency. I hope you read the  OP properly. I see that this is a stop gap preparation before and if  the emergency agency appears on the scene as they are neither omnipresent nor omniscient.  Read this'

And no need for anyone to develop a fit. I do not see any contest going on unlike many of you folks that see everything as theirs and ours.

This is not a contest, this is about your and your faulty assertions about other people.

LASEMA didn't get recognized as the best Emergency response agency in Nigeria for no reason, the agency is a full service agency backed by the state Doctor's guild and the Lagos State Ambulance Buses (LASAMBUS).

Even school kids have emergency response training.

LASEMA Launches School Emergency Response Team

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), has launched an emergency response team in public schools across the state.

Tagged School Emergency Response Team (SERT), the initiative, which was launched recently, will comprise school students, who will be responsible for responding to and preventing emergencies and disasters in the state through early warning to the authorities.

According to the General Manager/CEO of LASEMA, Dr. Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyintolu, “SERT is a group of school pupils or students assembled for each school and given basic training on modern response to emergencies and disasters which may occur in their respective schools. The students will also be required to render details on accurate and reliable assessment of the risk dynamics in and around their schools.”

Speaking on the functions of SERT, Oke-Osanyintolu said: “This includes careful and periodic examination of the walls of school buildings, potentially dangerous wells or pits and other hazardous situations on school compounds.

“In the event of an outbreak of emergency or disaster, members of these teams will spearhead the response, calming, arranging and mobilising other students and giving basic instructions that would be helpful to the safety of themselves and their colleagues.”

He, however, stated that this should not be misconstrued to mean that the SERT in any school is the beginning and the end of response to disasters, but it just kick-starts such response as help is awaited from higher quarters of stakeholders in the emergency management family, adding, “this is our latest effort towards disaster risk reduction and effective emergency management across the state.”

In pursuit of that mandate, LASEMA had inaugurated Local Emergency Management Committees for all local councils in a phased arrangement. The agency is also at the final stages of inaugurating emergency management committees for all markets and general hospitals in the state.

“The wisdom behind the idea, which is in line with global emergency management practice, is to ensure the safety of school pupils and students, as well as prevent needless loss of lives and property,” he stated.

Again, I'm glad that you people are finally stepping into the 21st century, but you need to realize that others have been enjoying the 21st century while you your leaders dey doze of pamy.
