Osun 2022: The defeat of APC will lead to the political death of many politicians-Lasun Yusuff

A former Deputy Speaker in the House of Representatives, Lasun Yusuff has revealed that the anticipated defeat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Osun gubernatorial election will result in the political death of many politicians.
Yusuff, who is the Labour Party gubernatorial candidate in the election also revealed that APC chieftains in the state were human haters who were not interested in developing young politicians.
Making this revelation while featuring on a radio current affairs programme in Osogbo on Thursday, Yusuff who served as Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives under the banner of the APC explained that most of the founding members of the APC in the state have been treated badly.
He advised that any politician seeking relevance should dissociate themselves from the party.
In his words, “We were the grandfather of APC in Osun and they treated everybody badly. I won’t wish anybody that has a future that is relevant to his environment to stay back in APC.
“A lot of people will die when APC loses the coming governorship election. They will die politically because they are not relevant politically and they have also made so many enemies and they are just ground-standing.
“Almost everybody in PDP at the top level in Osun is either our fathers, uncles or friends. I can describe them as that. But in APC, people hate one another a lot. There are supposed to be fathers, friends, uncles, but when you describe them like that, particularly APC, they are human haters.”
While debunking rumours of his alleged plans to step down for another gubernatorial candidate in the election, the Ilobu-born politician described it as far from the truth.
“The information is insane. Nobody has ever approached me to step down and there is nobody amongst those contesting in Osun today that is worth stepping down for.
“I am a veteran in politics. In 2011, I had 72,000 votes and in 2015, I had 73,000 votes for the House of Representatives seat. So, for someone like me who gathered such votes in four local governments, to be going into an election to step down for people who struggle to score about 250,000 votes in 30 local governments. It is insane. That is the only way I can explain that.
“It shows that in the politics of Osun today if you check election results, I am probably one of the most popular because to have 72,000 votes in 2011 election in four local governments and 73,000 in 2015 and for people who are ground-standing now that I’m going to step down for them, the best of them in 2018 had just 255,000 votes.
“I have been deputy speaker of Nigeria for four years. As of today, amongst everybody that is contesting, I am the highest office holder. That is the highest position anybody contesting is either holding or must have held.”

When APC Loses Osun Governorship Election’ – Lasun Yusuf

Former Deputy Speaker in the House of Representatives and Labour Party gubernatorial candidate in the Osun State election, Lasun Yusuf has opined that the defeat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will lead to the death of many politicians.
While featuring on a radio current affairs programme in Osogbo on Thursday, Yusuf said people will die politically because they have made themselves irrelevant in politics and have also made many enemies.

According to Yusuf, most founding APC members in Osun were treated badly and he would advise any politician seeking relevance to stay away from the party.

The former deputy speaker added that APC which is supposed to be like family has human haters and people hate one another.

He said: “We were the grandfather of APC in Osun and they treated everybody badly. I won’t wish anybody that has a future that is relevant to his environment to stay back in APC.

“A lot of people will die when APC loses the coming governorship election. They will die politically because they are not relevant politically and they have also made so many enemies and they are just ground-standing.”

“Almost everybody in PDP at the top level in Osun is either our fathers, uncles or friends. I can describe them as that. But in APC, people hate one another a lot. There are supposed to be fathers, friends, uncles, but when you describe them like that, particularly APC, they are human haters.”

Five Strategic Mistakes that Cost Gov. Gboyega Oyetola a Second Term in Office in Osun State – Rasheed Adebiyi

The much awaited governorship election in Osun State has come and gone. The results have since been announced. While the winners have kept rejoicing, the losers are already licking their wounds.

A lot of analysis has been flying around on social media on what could be responsible for a sitting governor perceived to be performing to have lost to a candidate he was contending with for the second time in four years.

While some people were of the opinion that the incumbent governor lost to the improved electoral process, others tied the PDP’s Adeleke’s win to peoples’ anger and the seemingly irreconcilable differences between Mr. Gboyega Oyetola and his predecessor in office, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola. However, the win and loss were a combination of different factors.

Here are some strategic mistakes made by the outgoing governor and his party, the APC, in the build up to the July 16th contest. Here are some outstanding issues that likely led to the governor’s failure to clinch a second term:

Lack of Strategic Connection with the people.
Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola committed a strategic error of not connecting with the people of the state. As a matter of fact, no democratically elected governor of the state had committed such an error before now.

For the entire period he has spent as governor until the election on Saturday, Governor Oyetola never deemed it fit to have a one-on-one with the people of Osun.

To be sure that this was a grave mistake, Chief Bisi Akande had Labe-Odan (Under the Odan Tree); his own successor, Governor Oyinlola put in place Gbagede Oro (Open Forum) while Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola had in place Ogbeni-Till-Daybreak; all were community mobilization and engagement fora to have a feel of what the people about the government and issues of governance.

The Positive Agenda Nigeria did a study to call the government attention to this lacuna. Even though, government people contended that fact with the organisation, that led to the establishment of the civic engagement unit and the introduction of Apero (literally translated as conference).

The first edition of the programme was held before the COVID 19 struck and we never heard of it again. So, the perception of the governor has not been any favourable even going into the election. People neither understood the governor nor his programmes. It was part of the reasons the people did not reward him with a second term.

Lack of governance thrust
For any discerning mind and governance-sensitive person in the state, the outgoing government does not have a clear map of where he intends to steer the ship of the state. His campaign focus then in 2018 was continuity.

From the time he was sworn in till he lost his second term ambition on Saturday, a large number of people did not understand the spirit, the focus and intention of his programmes.

There is no clear thrust of the government on education, economy, agriculture, security architecture even arts and culture. This has led to poor conception and execution of programmes. Mr. Governor failed to communicate the what, where, why and how of his programmes. He paid dearly with his second term bid.

Inability to reconcile the factions in his Party

A major factor that resulted in the loss of the Saturday election was the internal wrangling within the party. Those who could read between the lines warned of the dire consequences of a divided house especially as the election approached.

A reconciliation move ahead of the polls would have rallied the party members together and salvaged an impending defeat. It was a disaster waiting to happen. An insider even confided in me that they feared the internal disenchanted people more than they feared the opposition party.

A result of this was what we saw on Saturday. Words on the street on the election was that the Osun Progressive voted against the Ilerioluwa man.
Lacklustre campaign activities

The campaign activities of the APC was lacklustre. There was little or no vibes. There was no attempt to sell the candidates in a manner that would connect with the people. It was a campaign on the surface. No depth at all.

Adeleke Ademola was a familiar foe. There should have been a better way to tackle him rather than the attack on his dancing habit and lack of educational certificate. The party was not creative at all. There was no attempt to hype the achievements of Oyetola in a way that it will show how such address the perennial problems of the state.

The focus was on the personality of the PDP candidate. Unlike in 2014, when all kinds of campaign formats and appeals were used. It was a straight campaign jingle. Observations noted the lack of social listening to drive the campaign.

The campaign should have picked from public opinion and used such to counter the negative narratives already spread by the PDP on the street. The APC campaign council allowed the opposition party to hijack the narratives from it. It was a big error. They underestimated Adeleke, they paid dearly for it. For a familiar foe, Oyetola’s campaigns focused more at the weaknesses of their opposition instead of acclaiming the achievements of the governor and showing how such keyed into the progress of the people.

Our 10-week report indicated the campaign was dominated by personality attack at the expense of issue-based engagement with the people.

Low confidence in articulating the Administration’s Achievements
It was not as if Oyetola did not achieve at all in government. At least, as it is claimed, he was able to build roads, pay salaries as well as pension of retirees. The government also rehabilitated about 300 primary health care centres across the state and built the flyover at Olaiya in Osogbo, yet, people find it difficult to recall what he has done in office.

He should have done more to emphasize his achievement and connect it with the betterment of the lives of the people in Osun.

PRESS STATEMENT

21/07/2022

OSUN GOVERNOR-ELECT, ADEMOLA ADELEKE WARNS OYETOLA AND ALLIES AGAINST LOOTING / DIVERSION OF GOVERNMENT ASSETS

The Governor-elect of Osun state, Senator Nurudeen Jackson Ademola Adeleke, has warned Governor Adegboyega Oyetola and his allies gainst diversion and looting of government assets and public properties, alerting the general public to clandestine moves to convert public properties to private ownership and bankrupt state finances ahead of change of government.

The full statement reads as follows:

"The attention of the office of the Osun State Governor-elect, Senator Ademola Nurudeen Adeleke has been drawn to unwholesome criminal activities by some government functionaries and appointees under the watch of Governor Adegboyega Oyetola directed towards pilfering of state assets, conversion of public assets into private ownership, illegal awards of licences and incurring of superfulous loans and expenditure.

"We have it on good authority that Osun state assets within the state, Kogi, Lagos, Abuja and outside the shore of the country are being tampered with for private acquisition. We have detailed reports of several properties currently being processed for ownership transfer involving serving commissioners and top government officials, hence serious warning to those involved in the illegal deals.

Emerging reports also indicate several shady conducts ongoing within the state finance ministry Aside N17 billion loan allegedly taken by the Governor to prosecute the lost election, we are inundated with credible reports of emergency contract awards, hurried processing of payments vouchers and a grand agenda to incurr further debt under the guise of project implementation. There is an elaborate plot to further bankrupt the state to complicate governance under the new administration.

"We want to use this medium to warn all those involved in this criminal endeavour to desist from these nefarious activities as we will hold everybody accountable for their conduct. Let it be known to the Governor and his team that we have the complete records and inventory of Osun state assets. We are in possession of records of what was handed over to the Governor by his predecessor as well as true state of Osun finance and properties. Therefore, we put on notice that any attempt to divert state properties and muddle up Osun finances will be visited with full measure of accountability.

"Every government official from top to bottom will be called to account for their deeds and handling of government's assets. We specifically warn bureaucrats to safeguard their career by refusing to collaborate with any appointed and elected officials engaging in such criminal conduct.

"We also wish to alert the public on this subject matter. Let the public be aware that our common patrimony is being tampered with by an administration they just voted out of office. We promise to follow this matter closely and ensure that Osun assets remain secure and protected for the benefits of the public" , the statement concluded.

It is on this premise that the general public and the good people of Osun State are hereby alerted to the dastardly plan by Governor Oyetola and some of his officials, and for the public to report any such criminal moves which they may sense regarding this public alert.

Signed:

Mallam Olawale Rasheed,

Spokesperson to Governor-elect,

Senator Ademola Adeleke
