Vanguard gathered that the lecturers said they were not interested in the salary increase but a salary scheme that would clearly spell out their conditions of service.

He said with the new salary for the lecturers, they were now the highest paid workers in the state, with professors earning twice the salary of the deputy governor.

Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State has said the state government has fulfilled all terms of agreement reached with representatives of Academic and Non-Academic Staff Union of the state university during a stakeholders meeting with bishops and elders of the state in Onitsha last week.

Consequently, the governor expects the striking university workers to call off the strike and resume work.

But the striking lecturers rose from a meeting at Igbariam campus of the university yesterday and insisted on continuing with the strike because, according to a source at the meeting, government is yet to meet their conditions.

Vanguard gathered that the lecturers said they were not interested in the salary increase but a salary scheme that would clearly spell out their conditions of service.

After the meeting of the governing council and ASUU at the weekend, it was thought that the strike would be called off this week, but it appeared there is still no hope for the university to reopen on November 22, 2010, as promised chairman of the governing council, Prof Elochukwu Amaucheazi.

Governor Obi, while speaking at Anambra State Youth Reorientation and Empowerment Programme for youths of Anambra South Senatorial Zone at Saint Cletus Catholic Church, Nnewi, said that based on the intervention of the elders of the state, his administration had fulfilled the terms of the agreement.

The programme was organized by the state government, in collaboration with Anambra Rebirth and Institute for National Transformation.

According to him, with what has been agreed upon, lecturers of the university will be earning 80% of what their counterparts in federal universities earn at present.

The governor said that during the meeting hosted by the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, the stakeholders requested all parties to make sacrifices to reach a compromise, explaining that the state government had fulfilled all terms requested by the stakeholders.

He said with the new salary for the lecturers, they were now the highest paid workers in the state, with professors earning twice the salary of the deputy governor.

He said, in spite the pressure from the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission, no member of the State Executive Council was earning the salary recommended by the commission because of the lean resources of the state.

He also said that till date, states in the South West and South South, including Lagos and Rivers States, with their jumbo revenue, were not implementing the new salary structure.

After 6 months.

Can the students recover the 6 months lost?

Is it a sin for the students to have chosen Anambra state to further their education?

To be candid,
This write up got me confused a little.
I had to scroll back up again to look at the date.
...to now discover it's a recap from 2010.

So they are still digging up something against this man..

Salary increase wasn't the issue, but 'scheme', according to them. Also check the dates. This one says 'November 2010' while the other one you are referring to says 'October 2010'.

Did ASUU go on strike for over 6 months under his watch? If he couldn’t prevent local ASUU from going on strike for over 6 months in Anambra state, how will he resolve the problem of ASUU on a national scale?

National ASUU is currently on strike and their demand is not about salary increment. So, if Obi’s only solution to ASUU problem is to increase salary, it’s obvious then that he’s not the right guy for the job as ASUU demands are far more than salary increment.

No mind them. They even said salary increase wasn't the issue after Obi quadrupled their salaries. Instead, they were saying 'salary scheme'

Oga he never increased it, stop deceiving the populace
Same way doctors went on strike for 13 months, he never kept to agreement. The doctors just had to call of the strike when the masses were dying , they had no choice

That’s exactly my point. ASUU strikes are more complicated than limiting it to salary increment. That ASUU refused to call off the strike despite the increment is a good indication that Peter Obi lacked the basic understanding of what the problems were all about.

At national level, ASUU demands even gets more complicated. If Obi becomes president, I see ASUU going on strike for over a year. We must do everything to dodge this Obi bullet.

It is better to take 6months to sort things out once and for all than having the same problem everyday for the rest of your life, Our civil service system needed cleansing, If we can take a year to sort out all our problem in Nigeria to enjoy forever after, I'm good.
Besides, you have to dissect to fix and dissection is never pain free.

It's not about the problem you met on ground but how well it was resolved and with his experience in the state level, and advancement in the payment system, it will be far easy to resolve now irrespective of the level.
There are relatively adequate facts and figures to work with now, so what complication are you talking about here?
I thought BAT and co. wanted to intervene? You can simply give what you don't have.

Salary disparity was the major issue, which Obi had fixed.

The other issue, 'salary scheme', was raised after Obi had met the salary increase ish

Because it.is not your own 6 months.

Other states worked, why should Anambra be different?

In the same vein, this present nationwide strike by ASUU should.be supported since it would be the last.

The most important thing is that he was able to resolve the issue permanently that is why if any other states ASUU goes on strike Anambra state will never go on strike again. That is leadership resolving issues. Go and verify Anambra student are in class now while the students in your school are at home. OBIdient

Yes, ASUU Nationwide went on strike because of 2009 agreement they had with Federal Govt. ASUU Anambra State partipated in the Strike. It's was only Peter Obi as Governor of Anambra State that had a lasting solution to the problems. It's history that after call-off of the Strike. ASUU Anambra State chapter never participated in any Strike action called by the ASUU national body. That's what true leadership can bring to table. True leadership does not guarantee lack of problems, but it guarantees providing lasting solutions to every problem that comes up.
