I have wondered what really should be the yardstick for determining who to vote for as president. Should it be age, tribe, oratory, good looks, ideas, visionary, past record, or what exactly. Some of my friends have argued for age and I decided to do a little research about current and past presidents in other advanced countries and their ages. Does age always matter in developed countries or performance? What I discovered was illuminating. Note I left out Joe Biden of US( 78 years). Below is a summary of my findings and the link.

Oldest Presidents in the World
Most countries have age requirements for the higher political offices, especially president. This is because years of political or military service are often required/desired for the world’s leaders. Every single president on this list only gained their countries’ top office after spending years in various government and/or political roles. Many did not become president until much later in life, while others stepped into their roles fairly early in life and have held on to power for several decades.

As of May 2022, this list is as accurate as possible and will be updated as needed.

8. Karolos Papoulias (June 4, 1929 – December 26, 2021)

So what do you want us to make of this?

To justify why Nigerians should vote for Tinubu at 86years or what?

Besides, tell us about the antecedents of these men before they became presidents.

Were their ages controversial?

Were their true origin unknown?

Were their certificates missing?

Prior to their being elected, did they support an illiterate bigot who damaged their countries for 8 years so they could come in as the saviour?

Were they godfathers to touts?

Were their wives in their country’s senate for donkey years?

Were their sons in charge of signage and advertising in their states?

Were their daughters the Iyaloja General of the markets in their states?

Did they establish a tax company through which they siphon the funds of their states?

Lastly, tell us about their records in office.

Please be fast.

What I learnt from above is that age does not matter. That the most important attribute is track record and ideas. Remember the Bush family in US. The whole family were into politics and Americans didnt complain so long they performed. Even Bush senior and junior became US Presidents.

Did the bush family colonize America or their state to themselves?

Besides you haven’t given me answers to my questions above.

Prove to me that age matters. What do you want in a President ? Is it the freshness of a young man that will bring down the rising inflation or solve the insecurity problem in the North or a visionary president ? Does rising prices of food listen to age or you can use it to buy garri at the market ? if it is by age then Mark Zuckerberg or Elon Musk ought to be the president of US. If it is by age Yahaya Bello would have done better than Dave Umahi. You know our problem in Nigeria - we are too tribalistic and petty.

You are just unbelievable for someone that is supposed to have brains upstairs.

Tell us… why do banks insist on not employing anybody older than 27 years sometimes?

Why is enrollment into the military pegged at 22 for recruits and 30 for graduates?

Why do judges retire at 70 when they supposedly have more experience on the bench?

Ever heard the phrase “productive age” before?

Is the 86 year old man the only qualified person for the job?

Why don’t we go for both capacity and agility?

Okay brother, you said we should go for capacity and agility. Good. So, list for me 5 enduring capacities of Obi when he was governor for 8 years. Am waiting ! And then bros you need education. So, the civil service rules sets a retirement age for govt employees and Judges but neither the constitution nor the electoral act set any apex age limit for politicians. What does that tell you? Besides, can you name one country in the world that sets max age limit for politicians. None ! That's what I learnt from my research I posted up there. Maybe you didnt read it. The reason politicians take us for granted in this country is that we are not critical thinkers. How can an educated person like yourself be scammed with age issues when exchange rate never responds to age. Exchange rate only responds to innovative and creative ideas and vision, and not age.

The post is about age because many people were focused on the wrong criteria. I want a contest based on the ideas and achievements of the candidates as I believe those are the relevant criteria. I am not a party man. Buharis failure has nothing to do with age but everything to do with capacity. That's why I am focused on capacity. We should not be swayed by primordial and petty sentiments such as age, tribe, religion by politicians. We need a visionary leader !

Is age the only thing wrong with Tinubu?
