Nigeria is the largest African nation that was colonized by the UK. India is the largest Asian nation that the British Empire colonized (which then comprised present Pakistan and Bangladesh). Like all other countries the UK colonized, Nigeria and India were invaded by the UK, who took with them their technology, religion (Christianity), and culture, including names, clothes, food, and language. Despite the British’s best efforts, India did not reject British technology; instead, they rejected British names, clothing, cuisine, and even their religion. 80.5% of Indians today practice Hinduism, followed by 13.4% Muslims, 2.3% Christians, 1.9% Sikhs, and 0.8% Buddhists. English is widely used in commerce and administration even though Hindi is the official language of the Indian government, earning it the title of “subsidiary official language.” It is uncommon to see an Indian wearing a suit or with an English name. Why Nigeria Is Not Progressing Nigeria, on the other hand, accepted the British religion and culture—including names, clothes, meals, and language—to a significant extent, but it rejected British technology.
