The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Abiodun Alabi, on Wednesday said that there was a partial lockdown of the state by security agencies due to the threats of attacks by unknown gunmen.

Alabi disclosed this in Lagos during the Lagos State Stakeholders’ Forum on Police Accountability quarterly meeting and awards.

Alabi gave a keynote address on ‘Police Community Partnership: Panacea for Effective Police Performance’ at the event supported by Open Society Initiative for West Africa.

Alabi said that the partial lockdown was for a purpose, stressing that the police and other security agencies in Lagos were ready for any intruders.

He said that there were stop-and-search points at different places that had become part of the security architectures in the state to combat any likely intruder.

The Lagos police boss who said that though the number of police personnel in the state were inadequate, added that with community/police partnership, the current number could tackle all crimes and criminality.

Alabi said that the force was committed to accountability, where those with excellent performances would always be rewarded amongst the personnel, and sanctions would be meted out to erring and unprofessional ones.

He noted that all the statutory duties of the police were about the protection of lives and properties.

He called on the various community stakeholders: traditional rulers, community leaders, religious leaders, and transporters to always engage the police in their areas for better policing.

The CP urged communities not to be afraid of giving information about crimes and criminality in their areas to the police and other security agencies.

He also implored them to always be interested in the activities of the police and see the police as their family members and not mere friends.

Earlier, the Coordinator of SFPA, Mr Okechukwu Nwanguma, said that the forum was established in 2018 as an outcome of CSOs and other stakeholders’ engagement with police command in Lagos on issues of police accountability.

Nwanguma, who is also the Executive Director of Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre, said the forum had been and would continue to offer formalised and structured engagement with the various complaints and disciplinary units in the society.

He added that it would also stand as the liaison between the police and communities in Lagos state.

“Accountability is not an easily acceptable issue in the NPF. This is why we are happy that the current police leadership under I-GP Usman Baba has embraced and priotised accountability as an essential means of rooting out corruption and abuse in the force,” he said.

Nwanguma commended the Inspector General of Police for punishing those involved in various unprofessional conducts in the past, stressing that this action was an indication that the IGP was ready to combat corrupt practices and unprofessional conducts.

WHO SAYS 4 YEARS IN OFFICE IS NOT ENOUGH FOR MEANINGFUL ACHIEVEMENTS?

IT'S A FACT THAT 90% OF GOVERNORS IN NIGERIA SINCE 1999 WITH REVENUES AT THEIR DISPOSAL CANNOT BOAST OF A QUARTER OF THESE ACHIEVEMENTS EVEN WITHIN THEIR EIGHT YEARS IN OFFICE.

The lack of state-owned pipe-borne water in the homes of Lagos residents has continued to be a source of concern, a non-profit group, Corporate Accountability and Public Advocacy Africa (CAPPA) has said.

At a press event to mark this year’s World Water Day, the group said its monitoring team’s visit to state-owned waterworks showed that most of them are not operational.

The group said the waterworks it visited include the ones at Maryland, Mushin, Ikorodu, Obalende, Agbowa, Onikan, Ikoyi, and Amuwo Odofin.

Only the one in Ikoyi is producing water, according to CAPPA.

Which lock down? As far as we know in Lagos, police only keep and protect the facilities of the politicians.

Here in lagos we provide our own security, we sink borehole to get water while in livable cities in the world, people depend on water from the waterworks and watermains yet, some myopic illiterates will be challenging the number 2 most unlivable city rank globally given to Lagos.

Just report a crime to the police here. They'd never come on time and when they finally come, you'd be hearing stories...no fuel, we missed our way, blablabla. Until we stop playing politics with human lives in Lagos, we wouldn't get things right . With all the vices , bad infrastructure, dirty environment, open drainage system, some people would still challenge the ranking. They think its only when there's no act of terror or war that a city can be called livable. How many hospitals do we have and how many of them are well equipped and affordable to the common man? Is there health and social insurance coverage for all?

We do everything by ourselves in lagos yet, some people wouid say tinubu is working. What's our population in Lagos? Can someone tell? What happened to the 4th mainland bridge since 1999 they've been using it to campaign? What happened to our state owned airport? Between 1999 and now, some states had built their own airports without making noise about it or use it to campaign. During same period, Delta built an airport, Anambra built, Ebonyi built, as small as bayelsa is, they had their own airport. These are the things that reduce crime rate in the city, making it livable. Traffic will be reduced with functional rail system, Good road and airport. Less traffic, less crime

God bless pa jakande. He started the lagos literail in the 80s. If not for the interruption of regime by buhari coup, he'd have completed it within the 8-year period as stipulated. Since 1999, they've been using lagos literail to campaign, they'd do small and leave the rest till when another election period is approaching. Baba jakande built the largest housing estate in Africa in less than 4 years back then without borrowing. Lagos had always been rich but the resources had always been stolen. Till baba died, he had no single helicopter, talkless of 3 private jets.

Anyone who lived in the 80s would know how traffic was being controlled here, despite being a busy city. Every vehicle had their routes. If you go off route , you're in trouble. They had stickers on them. What do we have tiday? Oluomo and thugs everywhere chasing danfos and LT buses collecting money and someone would be saying lagos is progressive. Police used to patrol streets back then. When last has anyone witnessed or heard a police siren at night in Lagos? Someone was paying for those stuffs. They collect security votes but always share it. You see police only around them and abandon the masses who vote them into power every 4 years and once there's a casualty among the masses as a result of govt's failure to provide the basic needs like security, they come up with their propaganda, just to exonerate themselves or silence the family of the victim with threats, in order to cover-up. Is that good?

Sadly, most of those praising the government of the day and their paymasters have fallen victims of crime in lagos. Ambode would have restored the glory of lagos but the power that be didn't allow him. We'd get it right soonest.

But they kept denying the obvious.
They want to attack the economy capital after surrounding the political capital of the Nation.

It's obvious some persons don't want the elections to hold.
