It earns salaries, more than some humans. There are some other regimental pets that are kept by the military which are not official mascots. Even the human soldiers in the Army weren't paid salaries in the old African Kingdoms ,they were compensated with slaves and certain privileges like spoils of wars, chieftaincies, social ranks in the Kingdoms, Farms etc
