It must have sounded like a wonderful idea to somebody: a two-time national leader writing a newspaper column. Chief Obasanjo, whose sense of shopping must be worse than his sense of grammar, bought the proposal.

Really? And what exactly is wrong with that idea. It's seems this post is actuated by your dislike of the man. . .compounded by ignorance, rather than a clear enunciation of the merits and demerits of such an idea. Olusegun Obasanjo is actually a prolific writer.

Nothing wrong in a 2-time president writing column for a newspaper. Kofi Annan also writes a syndicated column for a group of global newspapers, including Nigeria's Businessday.

And whoever says Obasanjo doesn't have a 'sense of grammar' doesnt know anything. You can accuse Obasanjo with anything but not bad grammar. He may not speak foone or queen's English, but you can hard fault his grammar.  Writing is even easier. And with a man that has seen it all as Obj, he will always have something to write on.

My only problem is if this is not a contradiction of his statement, in 2007 or so, that he doesnt read Naija newspapers.

That man writes better and is more versed than most of these 'columnists' you see all over the place. For me, it would really be an honour and a pleasure to read him; hope I do.

This guy has 42 books on amazon, you might hate him or like him, but you can't take the fact that he is a prolific writer from him. I'm sure he'll do a good job

@ OP you must be an ignorant boy to have described the former presiden those words, have you ever read any of his books or his "Global connection" column in the "Saturday Mirror",I suggest you do yourself a favour by reading any of his write-ups first, that way you wont look like an ignoramous next time you want to comment on OBJ's writing skills;which I dare say is wayyyyyyyyyy ahead of those of most of the regular newspaper columnnists and brown envelope journalists

I have no problem with OBJ becoming a columnist but I dont expect him to write on Nigerian papers. If you can remember, this is a man that openly said that he doesn't read Nigerian papers.

i agreeno big deal in becoming a columnist, but disagree anybody can.
To be a columnist in a national newspaper, apart from having good writing skills, you must be versed in both current affairs and history, as well as wide read, else your column will be shallow and amateurish. when you write a sentence, you have to be sure of your fact because millions of people will be reading it. If you're a young journalist, like under40, you have to do a lot of research on 100 years history. without all thse, you column will just come across as shallow.

this is why a person like obasanjo, not only an ancyclopedia of history but also a seen-it-all part of Nigeria's history, participant in many historical events like independence, biafra war, and military politicsfrom 60s to date, will make a good columnist if he can articulate his message well.
