Re: Four injured in three-storey building collapse in Lagos by stormm: 6:31pm On Aug 20, 2011
Not a bomb. The building collapsed. The foundation must have been weakened by the several waste water channels that are around it. Dont also forget that the entire area- Dosunmu/Adeniji Adele, back of Olorogun Adodo's palace is flood prone.

@Rhino,

I'm correcting him. Nothing like that happened. The building actually sank and with the prompt assistance of Lagos Emergency services and the Fire Services, all the people trapped in the house have been evacuated. This is an eye witness account please. Not some journalistic mumbo jumbo.

At least four persons were injured when a three-storey residential building collapsed at Number 3, Orosanye Street, Lagos Island, at about 6pm on Saturday.

The Managing Director of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Femi Osanyintolu, told SUNDAY PUNCH around 8pm on Saturday that his team had concluded preliminary rescue operation, and there was no other person trapped under the debris.

“We have been working here for almost one hour. We rescued four people from the debris, and we have used our sophisticated equipment to confirm that there is no other person trapped in the debris. All the four people rescued have been treated. There was no major morbidity. Nobody died in the incident.” Osanyintolu said.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Command, Mr. Samuel Jinadu, also confirmed the incident and said no life was lost.

Though the cause of the collapsed building was not certain as at press time, the incident was the second case of building collapse on Lagos Island, in the past one month.

In July, about 15 persons were confirmed dead and several others injured when a three storey building collapsed at Mogaji Street, Lagos Island.

Following the spate of building collapse in Lagos State, the government sealed 34 houses on Lagos Island, which it said were unfit for human habitation and might soon collapse.

The state government also asked its officials to carry out thorough evaluation of other buildings in the area with a view to evacuating residents from those that are structurally unstable and pose a threat to the inhabitants.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Olutoyin Ayinde, said the government was concerned about the loss of lives in the recent collapsed buildings in the state, and would ensure that the menace was eradicated.

The Lagos SG should approve tougher sanctions for landlords whose buildings collapse as well as enact tough building plans to checkmate this recurrent problem of collapsed buildings. Some of these landlords have no regard for human lives, they use the cheapest & 'fakest' building materials & charge some skyscraping rents.
Re: Four injured in three-storey building collapse in Lagos by atasteve: 1:52pm On Aug 21, 2011
I will suggest that the process of building plan approval should be followed more strictly. Also landlords should be prosecuted if their houses collapse.

May God comfort those that lost persons and properties.

It's pretty sad with the rate buildings are collapsing in Lagos Island.

Hey guys its not only the landlords and there skyscraping rents at fault here. What of the uncrupulous quacks they call "Engineers". Masons and carpenters taking the roles of engineers, but who is to blame them too, where is the NSE and COREN in all of these. Its a massively corrupt and rotten system.

The solution is to have only Accredited Engineers (by COREN) responsible for any one building or civil project according to the building codes and regs. Secondly, there need to be more stringent rules/checks and balances on our corrupt govt. officials also approving these plans with no follow up supervisions.

Blame Bola Tinubu for centralising planning. It used to be, when the LGs were functional, that Physical Planning was regulated by the councils, and they had Town Planning Boards. Tinubu, in his haste to grab all the money the LGs were earning hitherto, took ALL their planning powers away, and the result is that everyone who wants to get approval has to go to Ikeja to get it done. Yes, they have district planning officers and offices, but those ones are just like DHL drop centres for British Visa. They don't give the approval. It is authorised from Ikeja, and then passed down to them. Some planning approvals are still done by Tinubu, and Fashola dare not disobey him when he says no. He used that to collect 50% of Oriental Hotel from the WEMPCO group, and tried to use it to collect 50% of The Palms. Amusan is an IBB boy, and he used that connection to keep Tinubu off. You can see how he was dealt with. Tinubu used LCC to fence off The Palms from Lekki-Epe expressway, despite the huge traffic that goes there, in a spiteful attempt to kill the business. Now, people have to drive through Oniru Estate to get to The Palms (Shoprite), but you can drive straight into Oriental from the expressway. It even has its own special dedicated traffic lights.

Why won't buildings collapse? Shebi the Planning Ministry is only interested in the money. No supervision, no checks, no nothing.

Interesting points you raised there about Tinubu especially the shoprite one, and i subscribe to your opinion but the LASG government officials would want to counter that with traffic congestion on the highway but of course the same thing is contradicted just on the other side of the highway or probably that they couldn't divert traffic into the nearby sea to decongest that side too and maybe balance the equation. So much for vendatta.

But, generally the whole of Central Lagos (isale-eko, idumota, idumagbo, ereko, oke-arin, iga idungaran, oke-suna etc) isn't planned at all and can remember most of it been that way growing up. Greedy developers and families play a large part too. But from stories i heard from my folks it wasn't always like that. No floods, drains existed and water actually ran, the best health care system etc.

It will take a very courageous governor to rectify Lagos Island. The problem there is more complex than that of Oshodi.

Re: Four injured in three-storey building collapse in Lagos by hackney(m): 9:40am On Aug 22, 2011
Its a terrible thing but the fact is that loads more half-baked structures will collapse.
Just take a look at the buildings in lagos and the proximity to one another cant be good for the foundations.

Also the over-crowding and structure age with no maintenance.

God help them.
