A Zambian student, jailed in Russia was killed during a battle in Ukraine, Zambia’s foreign ministry said Monday. He was a 23-year-old student the Zambian government had sponsored to study nuclear engineering at the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute.

The man was identified as Lemekhani Nathan Nyirenda by Zambia’s Foreign Minister Stanley Kakubo in a statement. Kakubo called on the Russian authorities to provide further details regarding the recruitment of Nyirenda and how he ended up fighting in Ukraine.

Nyirenda was convicted in 2020 of unspecified crimes in Russia and sent to prison for nine years and six months. He was serving his sentence at the Tyer Medium Security Prison on the outskirts of Moscow,” according to the statement.

The foreign affairs ministry said it received word of Nyirenda’s death on November 9, and that after communicating with the Zambian embassy in Moscow, confirmed that the student had been killed on September 22.

It is not clear where exactly Nyirenda was at the time of his death in Ukraine, but his body has been transferred to the Russian border town of Rostov.

Kakubo said he had personally been in touch with Nyirenda’s family in Zambia, and is hoping to provide more details of their son’s death once official communication from the Russian authorities is received.

When the news broke out on the 9th of August that Russia was recruiting Prisoners to be sent to fight in Ukraine due to lack of manpower, Putin fan boys on NL said it was propaganda till videos leaked of Wagner recruiting prisoners. This lad died a month later - cannon fodder.

Russia even dangled offer of citizenship to foreign nationals that signed up to fight for Russia on the frontline for 9 months or thereabouts.

He died fighting for Putin.

Yet, you'll see Africans blaming the West for his death.
Never crave substituting 'anything' for what you dislike. If you hate what's before you, take the patience and pain, go all out of your way to make or find a good one, not just another one. That's how to make progressive decisions.
I say this to those who embrace autocracies because they want to shed off the West. That's how some people brought APC to power.

African leaders are daft. They won't be getting any reply from Russia. Russia is far from being a transparent country.

I won't be suprised that the lad never got a fair presentation for the so called crime before he got banged up in jail. I googled his name to try and search for the crime he committed.

Unlike in transparent countries, the search hardly brought up any result aside a comment from his dad below:

His father said Lemekhani was jailed for drug trafficking while doing a part-time job as a courier.

According to Edwin Nyirenda, his son was given a parcel, which contained drugs and the police were not able to identify the person who gave it to him.

It's no suprise that it's the same people here shouting "Mother Russia" are also major supporters of APC on Nairaland grin

The mistake started from going to Russia to study when other better countries dey i.e. Countries with strong human right advocacy.

It's also not surprising to that the most popular Nairalander living in Russia has stopped posting on here and his YouTube channel since the invasion.

The putards know this is what they would get if they ever take up Russia's offer for mercenaries plus the citizenship bonus that comes with it, but they will rather stay in their comfort zone in Nigeria while typing and posting bollocks from their American android devices.
