consultant physician and nephrologist, Dr Olatise Olalekan, has called for the integration of dialysis into the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), to reduce the incidence of renal failure and death,

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that dialysis is a medical blood-cleaning process that replaces normal kidney functions.

“In the Western world, dialysis, which is one of the treatment modalities for chronic kidney disease is free; it is under their health insurance and so people who come down with this disease access dialysis in centres nearest to their homes,” Olalekan told NAN.

He noted that due to the high cost of dialysis in the country, patients had been selling their belongings, but die eventually due to insufficient funds for treatment.
